Regardless of who would care, its irritating that anyone would try to say that my data is less important than their's is, and thus should be sent to Japan before I get the packets.

Oh get a life, QoS is not a dick measuring contest. Without QoS you won't ever have such things as reliable and jitter free Voice over IP or Video On Demand. Most people use a QoS service almost every day, telecomm backbones use ATM which has Quality of Service; if it didn't, especially long distance phonecalls suffer from jitter, lost connections and so on.

Slashdot really isn't a Linux-news site. "News for Nerds. Stuff that matters". The reason there is so much Linux-stuff on the site is that Rob and Jeff both big Linux fans, plus that Linux is definetly a geek thing.

Besides, there aren't any interesting Linux-news out there currently.

Some people have actually forecasted that 'clashing egos' is the thing that will cause (noncommercial) open source to fail. I'm not saying there right, but it does seem they are on to something. It is good thing to have some authority that everyone has to listen and obey ("Do it like I say or you're fired!"). Linux has Linus controlling the kernel but he really can't nor doesn't want to interfere too much. If Linus started acting like Hitler the developers, who often don't get paid for what they do, would simply say "fuck this, do your own VFS cos' I'm not writing one line of GPL'd code ever again".

True, but with locked multipliers overclocking CPU == overclocking FSB.

They could argue that Windows 98 and Windows 2000 are different operating systems (they just happen to be binary compatible), so a program/API/whatever that runs on both of them could be called OS independant.

    But that would be silly.

I am not a vegan, nor am I a vegetarian - I enjoy a good burger every now and then (in McDonalds). I may not agree with the PETA ideals (or methods), but I sure as hell don't condem a group of people for having a very high respect for life.

Seriously, there are lots of MS employees reading and posting on slashdot. I really have to give these guys credit for being here as many posts make fun of Microsoft employees ("if Windows source code is released many 'real' coders will die laughing" and that sort of bullshit). Very mature and professional people if you ask me.

Theatre of Magic was a huge hit in the local arcade. Not only was the game insanaly cool, but the tilt sensitivity was set so high you could literally move the table half a meter and it wouldn't even give warning! You could also lift the table so much that a ball which was sliding towards doom in the side ramp would change direction and roll back to the playfield (but that's where I drew the line - besides, those thing are really heavy)..

That's common practice. Go look for a free download of ANSI C or ANSI C++ standard. You won't find one.
