Off-site = protection from random acts of major destruction such as fire, flood, tornado. Upstairs doesn't count, but your work office does. So does a relative's house, or a friend's.
Safe Deposit Boxes @ Bank: I was once told that safe deposit boxes are kept in rooms that aren't climate controlled...and if that's true, I would advise against it for long term storage of electronic data. I'm not sure how reliable that information was, since it came from a man who owns a records storage business. I'd love to sneak a data-logger into one for a year or so and find out for sure.
