THe motivational speakers I read like Larry Winget say otherwise. You are there to work the absolute hardest possible to the point of exhaustion. Blue collar jobs I had did just this and you were fired and replaced as someone else would be happy to do it a dollar or two an hour above minimum wage. That is the real world 70% of the world that is not privileged lives in. Hell, I have had several jobs where you were fired if you were more than 3 minutes late to work 3 times.
Every profession the worker pays for the privilege not to be minimum wage which is why they are willing to go in debt to get their degrees. It is up to the employee to be prepared and not the employer. THe employer just serves the customers and customers are not paying you to learn they are paying to get something done. Doctors pay $300,000 in debt to work, accountants pay $60,000 for the CPA and the masters degree, and $90,000 to be a teacher with college costs these days. The employer always pays jack shit as it is not their problem.
I am just the messenger and I would feel guilty and paranoid doing such things on the job as it is not customer driven and I need to be providing the maximum value in order to keep my job. Maybe I am scarred from my past here but, my ethic I learned in that as well as my undergrad in Business Admin teaches these concepts. Bosses demand it and if I were a boss I would demand it too. Work supposed to be miserable so you do not starve and you are there to make someone else money.
Your employer did that presentation probably because he would get a return. Not because he is a nice guy (he might actually be). The point is unless it is work related you need to be responsible. Especially if millions of out of work people would be happy to do your job. There are many who have holes on their resumes but can't get past HR for that reason. When things get less hectic it is always important to do the boring things like maintaince, QA, and patching. IT is the right thing to do.
IT needs to set polices to keep their networks secure. A violation is a violation to be fair to everyone regardless of whether they are in IT themselves as a programmer.
Almost all places I have seen have such policies and that is just part of working. No, I have never been fired for violating such policy in case you are wondering as I have been accused of by elitists who only have worked in good places. But being 3 minutes late for work 3 times is the norm for blue collars. For a white collar position this seems fair in comparison. If the company is publically traded you can bet HR and legal will implement such polices as could be a sign of inside trading if not a way to insecure their networks. Most places still use IE6 & 7 and do not do updates because they break apps. In such an environment you need to shield it from the outside world
But it does what it does fairly well for 1/10th the cost and time compared to Enterprise Application Server oriented platforms like Java EE and.NET. Most website development is fine with php just like you can make fairly medium complex projects with VB 6. Sure it can't scale to millions of lines of code but such a daunting project will not be done in a short summer anyway in some spare time.
Facebook uses php as do many websites and most of the jobs require it unless it is a corporate complex app which uses.NET and Java EE. Php has frameworks like Cake to hide much of the bad stuff where you can easily make small to medium sites that make up 90% of the market.
Ruby is not popular outside of rails and people love the templates and modify them for websites but then freeze when making their own solution. Python I never see jobs posted for and you will niche yourself out of the job market unless you are senior level. Python is interpreted as well while PHP runs inside the web server engine that is natively compiled.
Another great strength with PHP is you can download WAMP or a XAMMP stack on a flash drive which includes MySQL, php, and Apache on Windows which is what this person is looking for.
Your employer is not paying you to better yourself on their dime. Stop stealing his time and money and do proactive maintance on existing projects and code when the load is light.
I see far too many times where the bean counters cut employee headcount so much that people just put out one fire after another and it only stays together if no one is ever sick or goes on vacation.
You are a professional and now is the time to do things like QA, refactoring badly coded projects, and other things when the load is light so hell wont break loose when you get busy and your time is just putting out fires. Do your job right and you will be getting shit done instead of putting out fires.
You can better yourself at home on your own equipment as it is unethical to do anything but work your ass off when you are being paid. Also what if you write a cool killer app or FOSS project? Guess who owns it? IT wont be you on company equipment and time.
Since when do you have rights to use a computer and internet someone else paid for when you are not a responsible working adult yet?
A parent is liable when a kid does something and is a bad parent otherwise. Trust or not if you do not like it then get a GED, a nice paying job, and then move out? When you have kids someday your opinion will change and the problem I see with my stepkids is not them looking at porn, but them goofing off so I have limits imposed by the computer. Do not like it? Then be responsible next time and get A's and finish your homework and I will reconsider.
You claim you think it is so horrible and insulting for parents to tell you waht to do, but you tell us what to do in your replies.
This will be popular until some corporate CEO's wife finds out where said CEO was during "lunch".
You bring up a point even if the CEO!=worker.
What if some hotshot divorce lawyer uses this and hires a hacker or someone at work to find Bob had an affair. Bob could sue MegaCorp and Bob's wife could file a lawsuit if the company refuses to hand over documents and would have to pay subpoena costs for the whole non job related affair.
It could get even worse in sexual harassment cases. The supreme court ruled the corporation is liable for a hostile work environment at a bar if a boss sexual harasses an employee out of the office off the clock. This would provide plenty of evidence for the lawyers to drool over. What is next, MegaCorp knew Joe drove home from a bar at a business trip and did a DUI and killed a family of 4 but MegaCorp didn't stop him??? Yes bartenders and employers are liable if they know an intoxicated worker is leaving the premises. Now we have proof etc.
How can a child get any homework done, learn programming, or research things if the system is in the living room? If it is in the room such software is nice away from the TV and distractions. Obviously you can't know what they are up too in their rooms so something like Windows Live Family Safety can keep tabs on the hours on the computer, which sites they used, and other features besides censorship which is adjustable too depending on age level.
I do not mind teenagers knowing about sex, drinking , or weapons but I would not want a 7 year old looking at that etc.
There is nothing wrong with having something keep track of what they are doing. If a pedi acting like a kid is sending inappropriate stuff it is nice to know and sadly is quite common if you ask law enforcement agencies.
Also this enables kids to use computers in their room. No technology shouldn't replace the job of a parent but the parent owns the equipment and I see nothing wrong with this.
What is great about it is it actually works with non IE browsers too and any child can request to view a website blocked just like what the parent requested in case it blocks something they want to view.
Much of the security software blocks Bing and Google to protect the kids and I feel that is terrible as the internet is a great resource if they want to do a search or use Wikipedia for something.
Apple has a similar program but I have never used it. This is when Linux is not the best OS for families but it is something to take a look at and perhaps a Mac Slashdoter could give his or her take on the MacOSX family controls?
But if you do run Windows try the parental controls? If you update to Windows Live 2011 if your system has an older version it has additional settings. It works fairly well and if your kid needs to view a website he or she can email you to grant permission for custom white lists.
If I really want to be modded down I would suggest to go to IE add-ons for white lists for flash to get rid of porn ads and protect yourself. They may exist for Firefox too or Chrome with some add ons refering to the same lists but I have not tried it on those browsers. IE 9 if it is the only one that can do that is a good browser in this day and age as it is not 6 and integrates well with Parental control and Windows Live family Safety.
I believe Apple has a similar program but I have never tried it out.
Shoot I know people who are required to work 8 hours a day on vacation. If not they will be fired when they return as they normally work 12 hours a day and working 6 - 8 hours a day when they are on the virgin islands means they do not get so swamped they lose their job when they return. This is normal business.
The goal of any corporation is not to raise money. It is to raise their share price. Investors and CEOs only get paid if it goes up in value as most do not pay dividends. It is a scam where the stocks are useless pieces of toilet paper or monopoly money.
In such an environment you want to hire as few workers as possible, be lean and be business processed restructured galore and barely function as long as no one is every sick or goes on vacation. In such an environment it doesn't make sense to train someone as that can ruin their whole lean operation and hurt the stock price.
Even if you found a great company that did treat you right the workers are conditioned to always leave after 5 years so what is the point? Might as well cut benefits and wages if they are going to leave anyway and give it to the shareholders and CEO.
We are still in a depression and not a recovery. I use that definition because the only time new recessions like this one start when unemployment is already 8% is the 1930s and 1870s which were depressions. In such an environment why bother paying more. Sooo many people would jump at the job if HR didn't keep their checklist high for who gets to get the interview.
Much of it has to do with HR only looking at how long you did precisely x,y, and z as being the most important way to determine a candidates worth.
I gave up IT for these reasons. I had excellent reviews when I contracted out and beat expectations from all but one client who asked me to do something not IT related that I sucked at. Regardless when the economy tanks I substitute taught to pay the bills. HR considers this guy as having no real IT value and should go back to his strength teaching etc.
Meanwhile incompetent people who got in when the economy was good are gold as they have done precisely x,y, and did it for z time. They are gold
I am going back to school to get a teaching credential even though I hate the job. No one will hire me as I have a few contracts and I am not currently employed in IT.
What do you want to bet this company outsourced to save.03% profit and used the cheapest overseas bidder? But the analyst got his bonus. Maybe I am being too cynical but many of these medical companies are the greediest folks imaginable and when all software is viewed just as a cost center the MBAs start doing dumb things based on GAAP rules rather than common sense.
Well do not take this the wrong way or anything but if you do not run any AV software how do I know that your credible saying it doesn't slow your computer that much if you do not use it?
True Norton 360 and McCrappy circa 2006 was a total POS but that doesn;t mean they all are. Avast added only 3 second of bootup time to my computer and that is it and well worth it. Sandboxing slows your computer down. Anything besides DOS or pure assembly slow your computer down. I stand by my words when I say a good AV does not slow your system down too much if you anything modern. If you use a 8 year old system at work with XP 512 megs of ram with tons of shitty IE 6 add ons, and mcCrappy Endpoint that is 4 years old and then yes you need to wait 10 minutes to bootup and have your computer near unusable for 4 hours during its scan. That says more about your IT department than AV software
Avast blocked the exploit for me otherwise I would have known the name of the trojan. IE has been sandboxed for years yet malware finds a way through. It is your computer so do what you want.
I have seen at least 4 attempts of malware from ads hit my computer this year. Only one was from a porn site so the idea of not running anything is very dangerous even if you have noscript and flashbock as simple xml and ajax can get in that way. Flash by its very nature is a compiler and code executor and so is JIT javascript implementations done on modern browsers.
It was a faulty ad using a flash exploit. If you didnt run flashblock your system got owned. If you hate av software you can download a free scanner from Kaspersky that doesnt effect your system or use malware bytes from filehippo. You need to run AV software in this day and age. Modern av software like avast doesnt slow your system down
I know Windows Phone 8 shares the same exact kernel as Windows RT/Win 8 and only the services that start are different. I am curious if I can write a METRO app for Windows 8 on my laptop, will it run on a Win 8 phone?
I would be wary to use that as a router unless it runs OpenBSD and is super locked down tighter than a virgins ass. All the malware scanners that infect an unpatched machine in 4 minutes use x86 specific assembly.
One good reason to use a dedicated router with a mips or arm processor is that it can't be infected this way and the firmware and software with it lock them down very tight.
There is also Tomato if you like hacking which is a linux distro designed for Linksys routers
They are truly scared of losing their prized jewels with IE. Microsoft assumed since IE 9 was good that all of the suddent the mass migration to firefox and then Chrome would stop or even reverse.
As good as IE 9 is the trend just continued. Since people are worried about privacy I think MS is desperately trying to grasp on anything that makes it supperior over its competitors. Unlike Netscape they can't catch up with Chrome.
It is rediculous that I had to hunt down for an.iso from pirateBay and go through all the hassle to avoid the slowdowns with the software that came with my Asus even after I used PcDecrapifier. I should not have to be in this situation and I pray to god the image I used does not contain a rootkit
Well content creation is still HUGE and not a niche. Sure spoiled teenage girls in college might still buy a MacBookPro to play farmville and IM there friends but those who do word processing and spreadsheets make up the majoirty of the office market.
Tablets are not multitasking friendly with no task bar, aero peak, instant search, etc.
Until MS adds this to METRO I will stay with Windows 7 and a big screen has a home too. While the average retail worker who is broke wont have to use his 8 year old hand me down PC to browse the web, he can his phone to do that now.
The PC aint dying soon nor will it be a niche until things radically improve.
Slashdot is still indexed by Google. I can go to google and do a site:slashdot.org x and it will find X. So Google still ranks and indexes the nofollow tag anyway.
I will take an OS that just works with a gui that works and helps me be productive any day. Android is great for tablets and I so not see the problem with using it on netbooks. I can find things with it that I can't with KDE.
I wish you were right.
THe motivational speakers I read like Larry Winget say otherwise. You are there to work the absolute hardest possible to the point of exhaustion. But it is more profitable and easier to make them never go on vacation and easy to do with high unemployment and other employers doing the same thing.
