""some shiny new buttons and further isolation of non i.e. users is not innovative""

A lot of these features (eg. the dhtml calender) seem suited toward an office environment. Not sure if this is a huge trend, however in my office *everyone* is required to use IE for the corporate intranet. Those of us who provide support for Netscape can use that as well, however there isn't too much of a need for either browser competition, *or* open standards compliance on the corporate intranet. This is the crowd I see mostly using all the bells and whistles, the phb's webslaves, who have to impress clients and partners with a lot of nifty but useless features on the intra.

Explain why they need to be forced to open their standards (without using FUD.) Don't get me wrong, I agree that it would be good thing if they did, however I don't see why anyone should be forced to give up their advanced features. As the IE program director said in the article, they are actually innovating (being serious on this usage). If the features prove to be good, then the other browser makers will somehow incorporate them. If not then they will go the way of the BLINK>.

Timothy seems to be fairly cool about the trolls, from what I gather, where some of the /. admins are simply apathetic, stating that they simply aren't wasting their time on this idiots.

Or write a script for the 'nix client that repeatedly downloads then deletes these files from that user. I'm just as bored as they are, and this could be fun...

From what I remember when they updated slashcode they decided to drop ad-fu (or whatever it was called) in favor of the same system that Andover was using, which includes banners from doubleclick, focalink, and a few other of the choice ones (some of the same ones I encountered on pr0n sites in the past).

I could be wrong on this, I would like to think that when the guys at slashdot say they have editorial freedom that means that they could tell Andover to shove the D.C. ads, but even after a few individuals raised a HUGE stink about it a few months back I've still ran into them every so many pages. This after several articles about doubleclick that were less than flattering.

Funny you mention Jazz musicians. Most of us cut their teeth by learning from 'fake books'. These are basically the melodies of the song written over top a representation of the chord changes, which we would memorize to help improvisation.

The most popular among these are a series called the "Real books". These are basically printed up on a cheap litho machine, comb bound and sold 'backdoor' to music shops and such. They are HATED by music publishers, as much as they are massive copyright infringements. However the publishers have yet to come up with anything that's near the quality of these things.

I've never heard of anyone who knows who publishes these things, and that is probably a good thing (popular legend says it's all one guy traveling the country selling them from the trunk of his car.) If you ever want to get one, talk to a music instructor, one who groks jazz. They can hook you up if anyone can

How 'bout the irony of you posting this onto a site where the submitter of the story warns you about it when *THEIR* site is full of doubleclick code. users.pl?nick=Interiot had a sid about this (sid=doubleclick) a while back, but noone seemed to care too much. Anyway the ad I'm getting at the top of this page is from "focalink" which AFAICT looks to be about as pervasive, if not invasive (I really hate having to browse on public terminals:/).

So what ever happened to Ad-Fu? BTW I'm not blaming Emmet on this, but I found that pretty funny myself. Not funny ha-ha mind you...

I don't think Nike's security is to blame at all for this, unless they had too secure a site. It makes sense in a strange way, I mean you finally get all the exploits and bugs ironed out of your IIS, everything is singing quite nice, and there haven't been any hack attempts on your page in a dogs age. So people have finally figured out that there's a really great way to create the illusion of defacing a web page, and it requires much less effort than actually looking for security holes. Enter the age of the DNS-submission-form-kiddie.

Believe what you want, but I'm also suspicious about believing a "magic" operating system can make video cards that much faster.

Okay, so the idea here is that Be developers sign an NDA, come up with better drivers than the video card companies themselves produce for Windows. Let's see how long *that* lasts. No really, after all the fact is that if the Video card companies were squeezing as much performance as was possible out of their cards then people would not be as quick to go out and buy the next one. There is no doubt that if the card manufacturers would just release the data, then it would be a win-win-win situation all around. Everyone *could* have better drivers, depending on how much interest there was and how many folks wanted to sit down and hack on it.

    If there's anything I take away from the facts(?) in this thread it is the following;

    1. Card manu's drivers okay.
    2. Committed and NDA'd developers' drivers appear better.
    3. People should pressure the cardmakers to release their specs, and reward those that do with sales, rather than endlessly flaming Be based on the fact that they do okay in benchmarks.

f someone from Microsoft posted that an anti-Microsoft post should be moderated down would you support that too?

Only if they are astroturfing. I personally would be much more inclined to have Be get a spot on my HD if I could see the source (read that as have others be able to look at/improve/fix the source), but I'm not going to go instantly believing anything anyone says around here, so I find that moderating those sort of posts down to be very patronizing to me as a reader (I hope we're referring to the same post here, I just got lost in a maze of "nested" where the comments don't slide all the way to the right like they used to. Rob, make it like the old way again please?)
