How about the fact that you can still sell the customer the product (manuals, support, training etc) but you have to make the source available, so a customer makes some changes to the software so that does what he wants it to do.
Now if your selling support for a product and a customer makes these changes you may not be able to support these changes, so you ask the customer to send the changes he/she made to you, you look at them and if they apply to the general plan of the software you can if you want include them in the next release.
So my point is this company may be having there software being used by many people but not everyone knows how to code and debug stuff, and there will always be a need for some support, not only that but the people who do know how to code etc, if they think they are parts of your software that could be improved may well improve your code for there own benefit, hence your company get a free tester and additional programmer thrown in for free.
I guess by you saying "secondary education" you are probably in the UK and if you believe that these sort of things don't happen over here i can tell you from experience that your wrong, i spent 7 years in senior school and would not like to repeat it, but in the UK weren't encouraged to talk about feelings etc, it was more like stiff upper lip and get on with it, yes the experience made me who i am now and i like who i am, but what could i have been if i'd had all the benefits of a happy school life and no hassles ?? Rant over.
I'll believe this when I see it, so many promises have been made in the past, but if it does come about for £30 pm i'll be one the first, chances are though we'll probably have to pay £massive to upgrade to DSL.

How about this, Microsoft produce a Web Server that interacts with every other web server on the lan (read personal web server or whatever) and this allows everyone to create a list of information on every PC, so effectively there's this one big ever changing intranet, with document management and data sharing using XML etc etc, the thing to be worried about is not whether they are going to be doing the same as APACHE but what is it that they are going to be doing different, all they need is one Killer Feature and Joe Public won't look anywhere else.
