  1. Hands off on Ask Slashdot: Securing Systems you don't Manage · · Score: 1

I am a college student. I live in the dorms as a junior and admin my own insecure linux box. Its so insecure its not even funny. In our networking class we needed a nearby box to portscan so we used mine. Found a million ports open that didn't need to be (I run no email, but POP2 is running).

The moral of the story is, its none of the colleges business to worry about MY security. If someone hacks my box, its my problem. Not the college's. You should stop servers that suck bandwidth and hands off everything else.

Firewalls are lame. It only limits the power of students to learn. Thats the point of a college. Talk to admins of important boxes (department servers, etc), warn students about security. But, don't waste the time, effort and money trying to prevent students from themselves.

  3. O'Reilly on Airing Open Source Dirty Lanundry · · Score: 1

The best is Perens on Tim O'Reilly. Hate to say it, but I sorta agree. Althought I love their books.

  4. O'Reilly on The Collaborative Software Community Awarded · · Score: 1

I love O'Reilly and really think they are a great company. But, are they really the spokescompany of the Open Source Revolution, per se?

I'm sorta sketchy on their involvement in the whole thing. I love their books, but I kinda wonder about them sometimes.

  5. PPP Worries no More! on The Road To Linux -- The Summit, but not the Peak · · Score: 1

    Get this script:
    shellzrus.com/~patrick/pppsetup

It has saved my butt and countless others.
I encourage anyone and everyone to use it.
Sets up PPP in 2 min. Works on RH, Slack, whatever....

    Enjoy.

  6. Awesome Book on Review:The Perl Cookbook · · Score: 1

Programming Perl and Advanced Perl are excellent texts, if you know the commands and maybe not so much how to use them.

The organizational structure of the Cookbook allows it to be not based on the language functions, but on what you want to do.

I use this book more than my copy of Programming Perl, and feel it is essential for learning Perl. Mostly because the text Learning Perl doesn't support you in the high-end ideas you try to complete. This book was one of my favorite purchases and most used books. 11/10.

  7. Tips on Ask Slashdot: How can Free Web Service Recoup Costs? · · Score: 1

Just don't go the way of that damn GeoCities. I won't even go to their sites anymore.

Watermarks, popup windows are all bullshit!
just like the yahoo email that signatures all your stuff if you use them. I think that you need to make concessions if you are getting something for free, but its getting ridiculous.

  8. Uhm... on TIGER/Line 1997 data set to be released as GPL · · Score: 1

    Can he do this?
Tigerline is cool and we wanted to use it for a

Palm/GPS/Mapping app. But, couldn't find any free maps w/ streets. There is lots of topographical data from census.gov avail for free. We used some of it (500+megs) and used a cgi to create the maps we wanted. This would be AWESOME!
