Yes indeed, AOL linux is the talk of the town. Check out this video of Steve Case III showing how easy AOL linux is.. (video will download, your CC will be charged $8, video will only play if you are a 15yr old white male with acne and no friends. Sorry but thats our target demographic today)
Call today for 4 trillion free trial hours or 1 month, whichever comes first.
Brought to you by AOL Time Warner, we are your friends, Really.
Not that this article mentioned anything about DRM but you have to wonder if Time Warner is going to want their precious content being accessed on these damn linux machines that only hackers use. I wonder what methods they will take to enforce DRM.
Im quite shocked that so many of you are against HDTV. Any time some new piece of PC hardware comes out that offers mind blowing performance and better picture quality (a new video card for example. Everyone here jizzes themselves to scrape up the money to buy it so they can get 4billion frames per second at 2k resolution or whatever. Then next year when the card is obsolete they buy yet another one. Im sure you would get much more mileage out of an hdtv and STB.
Those who do not see the value in HDTV, I ask if you've seen a proper demonstration of HDTV and its capabilities? If you answer you saw it at circuit city or future shop or whatever I swear I will slug you. You guys do not buy your computers at circuit city and you shouldnt buy or compare TV products there either. I wonder how many of the nay sayers have seen an amazing HDTV like the pioneer Elite 520 or something similar properly calibrated to view hdtv? BY properly calibrated I dont mean factory settings which are proven to cause permanent damage to TVs. First step is using a disc like Avia or Video Essentials to adjust the settings for optimal performance and picture. FYI the settings from the factory are the direct opposite of these optimal settings.
Do yourself a favor and visit a nice mom and pop shop that specializes in audio/video see for yourself how hdtv blows DVD quality out of the water. See it as its meant to be, done properly, not in an overly lit mega-electronics store show room.
Im quite surprised that/.ers arent the early adopters of this technology, we are usually on the cutting edge of everything. Many times we cry about the lack of good product, such as the case with overpriced CD technology. Here is something that is head and shoulders above everything else out there, and you reject the hell out of it. I believe you are in the minority here as many many people are dying for hdtv rollout. In fact I haven't heard of many people who have HDTV at home and are not happy with it and wish to see it fail. Is it the close ties with hollywood? the evil movie studios? the copy protection they seek to build into hdtv products? How is this different from DVD technology that we all have embraced the shit out of? DVD offered a much better product and improved viewing experience, it has copy protection built in but almost all of us support and love our DVD collections. bizzare.
As far as the lack of good programming for hdtv arguement goes. I do agree there needs to be more, but whats the point if you guys wont get into it for whatever reason? Are you aware that one of the greatest channels around has introduced an HD edition? Discovery Channel HD is available now and offers boat loads of excellent original programming and now in HD? Show of hands, How many of you like the Discovery Channel? Or what about HBO? Do none of you guys watch the Soprano's? Showtime is in HD as well.
This is something the consumers want. I think everyone should get involved, find out more about the HD offerings in your area, learn about the legislative/technology issues that are slwoing the HD rollout. Get involved, help shape hdtv to something you would like. Its still early enough in the game to voice your opinions and have them be heard.
I would also like to mention that many of the video cards we use in our PCs can handle HDTV feeds, there may not be a need to go drop $2000 on a new set after all.
I am biased, I do own one of the finest HDTVs available, it has been calibrated and tuned by one of the most famous and reputable ISF engineers in the world. Take it from someone who has seen the promise land, it is a good place to be and I would like it if you all were here.
When I first read the headline I was upset, damn RIAA and MPAA flexing their muscles, Big businesses using any means necessary to protect their interests seemed to fly in the face of what the educational institutions are all about. As I read on and read many of your comments my eyes were opened. My experience with kazaa and p2p apps is limited to my use and those people in my small company. Even with everyone in the office downloading/uploading on kazaa, it rarely made a dent in our available bandwidth. I really wasnt aware of THAT problem. Hearing many of you complain about how your bandwidth is severely taxed because of them made me agree with you. If I was at work or back in school and I couldn't efficiently use the network because of the people abusing it, I too would want to kill and mame. So I started reading the comments with one opinion and ended up with a different one. I think USC is making a fair call. Thanks to everyone for sharing their sides of the story. I agree with you that people should not abuse reources and copywrite laws, but I also agree that technology should not be banned when it has perfectly legal uses.
I thought I remembered a story about a decision that would make ebay follow all the rules and regulations that traditional banks follow. What was the outcome of that and would that have prevented ebay from being able to screw people like this? IS Ebay even FDIC insured?
Even their CEO bailed out (smart move there, larry [vasoftware.com]. Hope you like that zaurus you put on your corporate american express platinum credit card at linuxworld nyc 2002. I was right behind you in line, and saw it, don't deny it. I'm glad you're still making 200+ grand a year, while most of the developers you brought on who worked for you are now either unemployed, or working at mcdonald's).
This guys a CEO and only making 200k a year? I dont know what part of the country hes in but that does not seem like enough for the amount of crap a CEO has to deal with. Im a generally lazy person, that level of responsibility and I would want a lot more then just 200k. Then again I think those guys from enron and worldcom are A-O-K ::sarcasm::
By law, cable companies must pass the analog cable signal over that same digital line. Here's an interesting test, get a coax-splitter, split the cable at the wall, run one end straight to your TV, run the other into your digital cable set-top box. then run the cable from your set top box into a second input on your tv as you normally would. Switching between the two inputs youll see they both work. The difference being, the analog signal looks far better, has no stupid advertisements, no crappy channel guide, and the channels change instantly. No need to wait for them to fill in like with digital cable. The catch is, some channels are only available with the digital decoder box. I hate my digital cable, P.O.S. doesnt even properly pass a dolby digital signal since it has no capable outputs. This way you get the option of both digital or far better analog, all for the price of digital cable. One more thing, if you are feeding the analog signal straight to your set, you dont have to use their crappy decoder box, and you can split it off to other TVs in your house.
Xbox has support for 480p, 720p and 1080i resolutions. These signals are sent via the component video cables and the optiona l 15pin RGB connector. Good luck finding games that support the higher resolutions though. I heard that DOA3 Halo and Madden supported them. Indeed DOA3 does not have any visible scanlines but the characters are still jaggy and stairstepping. Im not an expert but antialiasing problems do not go away when you run one of these HD games.
In my experience, the very best looking games are Halo and Rally Sport Challenge. Gear:

This is upsetting. I wasn't aware of Sonys role in making it impossible to return CDs. I just finished reading "Inside The Xbox" where they related stories of how sony would threaten gaame developers if they co-operated with the Xbox developers.
Sony does sound like an arrogant company hell bent on controlling everyone and everything. One point I disagree with you on though is SACD. Im anxiously awaiting a widespread adoption of a higher resolution audio format such as SACD or 2channel DVD Audio.
Its called radio and its free, or heck even MP3. Both our cheap relatively speaking but both also sound like crap compared to the original CD. I dont want a cheap product, I want a quality product and I am willing to pay for it. I guess thats why we pay top dollar for a fast PC, rather then buying a cheaper PC that isnt as fast. For the record, I am a Audiophile and home theater enthusiast first and foremost, Slashdot member and RIAA hate monger second.
I always thought the best way for the damn labels to justify the high prices and fight mp3 pirating is by offering a better product to the people. SACD is it. After hearing 2 channel SACD, any audiophile will gladly pay $20 or more for such a recording. Let the kids on the internet trade their mp3s, but if you want the uncompressed joy that is high-res audio, you will buy the SACD. This is of course until technology and bandwidth progresses to the point where sharing gig size files as commonly as we share mp3s becomes common place.
DVD Audio=gimmicky crap IMHO. I want more range, not more channels. I was really stoked about 2 channel SACD, even that is now multichannel. Surround sound is great for movies but not for music. Hearing the guitar player in the rear speakers and the bass player in the front, then they rotate around in 3d space, what a freakin waste of time and insult to a music lover. Maybe when engineers start recording musical sessions with multichannel in mind it will improve. But for now, anything above 2 channels is pretty hokey. All this time and they are still trying to perfect 2 channel audio.
It has been proven many times over that even the frequencies that you cant hear have a significant effect on the ones you can hear. Removing them simply because the human ear cant detect such hi/lo frequencies does in fact take away from the overall sound. MP3 is not good. Hell, after hearing 2 channel SACD, im even to the point where CD audio is not enough anymore.
I just bought a winboox X1. Aluminum Alloy case, 1ghz P3, 320mb, 30gig, 13.3'' screen, DVD/CDRW combo Drive. It only cost $2399 and is worth every penny. Only problem is I cant get X configured to run on it. The video chipset should be working (supported sis 630) But I cant get this damn thing to make it through Xconfigurator succesfully. I cant even get 640x480 x8 to run. This would definitely be the baddest little linux laptops on the planet if I could just get X to run.
And then i read this...breaks my heart. I was told in my San Fran suburb (san Rafael) I would only get 28.8 speeds as they upgrade. I plugged it in for the first time, connected through linux and got over 208k down, 80k up. I nearly wet myself that a company had under promised and over delivered.
