  1. Re:What about HDTV? on Industry Agrees On Next Gen Unified DVD Standard · · Score: 1

Flawed argument. For example, just this last Sunday and Monday, they broadcast Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Temple of Doom in full HD Glory. You can't buy those DVD's yet even.

Why is that a big deal? Because it was "in the clear". Meaning, all you need is a set of rabbit ears, and you can receive it. In fact, I received it from my $18.99 UHF Radio Shack Double Bow Tie antenna, into my Hipix HDTV card, and output it to my 65" 16x9 Mits TV. Dolby 5.1. All this over the air (OTA). It doesn't get less protected than that...

Yes, there were commercials, wut with 2 second intervals on file creation, those are not too hard to get rid of should you want to.

The big deal about these discs is not for computer storage... it is about watching movies in full 1080i. If I could buy my movies on a bludisc and they were the same quality that CSI, Alias, etc. are in... I would do it without hesitation. In fact, I will likely stop buying DVD's, and just go rental for now.

All the MPAA really cares about is that you can't copy this stuff... they will gladly take the opportunity to sell me the same movies, in a different format, again. Maybe I am a sucker, but damn HDTV looks so good, I am willing to pay to see HDTV quality on DVD's. That is what this is about.

  2. Guess I am Lucky on IBM DeskStar 75GXP Hard Drive Failures? · · Score: 1

As the two 75GXP's I have running on a 3Ware card have worked great for about a year. These drives are the best I have ever purchased, and I have been recommending them to others.

    Guess I better stop recommending.

  3. This brings back memories... on DIY Railgun Projects · · Score: 2

About 14 years ago, I went to my girlfriend's father's work. This was in San Diego at a time when the defense contractors around there were numerous(I was 15). Anyway, he showed be a plastic projectile that was launched using a rail gun. I suppose it used some sort of metal launch 'thing' to get the plastic to go, and they used plastic because an actual depleted uranium projectile was too expensive for basic testing. This plastic projectile pierced a 2" thick steel plate and then around 3 San Diego County Yellow Pages books (about 5" each) and turned into a twisted, mangled piece of plastic with tiny bits of yellow paper stuck all over it. Very cool. Supposedly it was being developed as a tank killer that could fire from miles away. The other cool thing they had going was an "air mine". It was a land mine that would take out low flying aircraft like helicopters. If I remember correctly, it used directional laser detection to locate a target... I don't know what it did to destroy the target though. Only saw a picture of it firing, and he couldn't tell me about it.
