When I got my ThinkPad 600e used, it had about one hour worth of battery life. Within one year (and only moderate use, as it is not my primary laptop) that fell to seconds, and finally to zero.
I no longer keep the battery in the bay, as it is just dead weight. It really is a shame, since it is the perfect laptop for Linux (well supported hardware save the modem, three mouse buttons). I currently use the laptop only while tethered to AC.
Yes, that is correct. I would also add that the gyro is really intended for a different application than the regular-old-mouse mode. The gyro feature is most useful when giving a presentation or demonstration where you are standing in front os a projection screen or video wall. Otherwise, I just use it as a wireless mouse with a really long (~100 ft) range.
Actually, most laptops will output a much higher resolution than the native LCD resolution using a docking station or the VGA port. That being said, if I were to get a new laptop now, I would probably look for at least SXGA (1280x1024), as the units I have used with that resolution are really nice. The laptop I currently use has 1024x768, which is still fine for what I do.
I have been using vpnd for about six months now, and I have to say that it has been very stable and completely seamless to my Windows networks. I used two old Pentium MMX boxes that were collecting dust, and they are more than powerful enough for the load. It is worth a look if you need security, reliability, and transparency. Best of all, it is free at http://sunsite.auc.dk/vpnd/.

You can use GotMail with a regular M$ hotmail account. I haven't actually tried it, but it has been around for a while.
