  1. Soundcards on Worst Linux Annoyances? · · Score: 1

I've been using linux for a few years now and the thing I consistently struggle with is getting soundcards to work. Either they just work out of the box or they never work despite hours of tinkering with isa pnp and other such delights!

  2. The actor *made* the character on Salon on Gollum's Failed Oscar Nomination · · Score: 4, Insightful

For me, the very things which made gollum have such a big impact on the movie were provided by the actor. The emotion, the delivery, the facial expressions and the movement were all provided solely by the actor - I think this makes Andy valid for an oscar nomination. It's altogether different to the usual voice-over stuff that Eddie Murphy and Tom Hanks have pulled off so well in the past for truly computer generated characters.

  3. Re:true world champions on World Cup Final · · Score: 2, Insightful

FIFA have changes the rules for the next world cup. For the first time the champions have to qualify, only the hosts get to the finals automatically.

Some would argue that the qualifying process is good the for the teams. France entered this years competition probably short of much needed competitive games under their belt and looked a little bit off the pace - I'm sure they will be back next time however.

  4. true world champions on World Cup Final · · Score: 2, Insightful

Brazil by far the best team in the world at the moment will have to qualify for the next world cup in Germany 2006 where as runners-up Germany get a free ticket as hosts, oh the irony!

The world cup was a fantastic success, it's great to see a competition where the world champions actually have to play teams outside of their own country unlike the superbowl or so called 'world series' ;)

  5. Genius ? on Deciphering Windows Product Activation · · Score: 1

If I wasn't cynical, I'd be wondering about the possibilities passing this
information to Microsoft opens up. Just think about this:

    • Automatic notification of new firmware/drivers being available
      for my hardware.
    • Communication of known issues from vendors via Microsoft
      direct to end users.
    • Advice on potential interoperability issues provided each time
      I change some hardware out.
If I wasn't cynical, I would be really excited about the possibilities
and potentially huge value for money from my software purchase.

    But I am!

  6. Silly on Getting Fired For Not Taking A Promotion? · · Score: 2

Getting fired for refusing a promotion would
make a simple case of constructive dismissal
    under UK employment law.
