I was flying through London last Christmas and managed to grab a couple of hours "telly" time on a stopover.

The long and short of it: a comedian called Mark Thomas was using the UK digital protection act to requisition any and all recorded instances of him in public - a quick websearch yielded this http://www.mtp2001.co.uk/

The interesting thing was that in a typical Goverment inept fashion 1/3rd of the feed he attempted to solicit was either

    1) The wrong camera, time and location

    2) Unwatchable - CCTV doesn't give much definition

Why don't we have comedy like this in the US?

Wow, strike the solid state theory, from http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/secure_del.h tml.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, "volatile" semiconductor memory does not entirely lose its contents when power is removed. Both static (SRAM) and dynamic (DRAM) memory retains some information on the data stored in it while power was still applied. SRAM is particularly susceptible to this problem, as storing the same data in it over a long period of time has the effect of altering the preferred power-up state to the state which was stored when power was removed. Older SRAM chips could often "remember" the previously held state for several days.

Strikes me that mechanical media may not suffice in high secrecy operations. You'd be better off to run a solid-state drive with no battery. With a relatively innocuous label "accidental" erasure would be guaranteed. Secrecy is always perceptual - preventing physical access or high strength encryption would be much more efficient methodology.

The Film industry - plotlines and movie backdrops - reflects the popular climate. Its not like after WW2 people wanted to be reminded of their day to day existence. Hence the Abbot/Costello, Martin/Lewis and Hope/Cosby cash cows ? Burns/Allen and Lucy/Desi were on nightly. Theres even a couple of movies about the Vegas standards real and imagined.

This is all a tried and tested formula - Straight Man, Funny Man. Most incarnations we see these days are direct reworkings of the classics with more liberal content. I think the Three Stooges offer the only original take on the genre - or maybe they just scared off the imitators.

You do tend to see soooo many comedians these days that are only half the act and as the result they Carrey around the place as the straight man AND funny man. Also a reflection of the times - rampant egotism and inability to share the spotlight. Very often the audience is one half the act (something Kaufman did brilliantly).

These days we're "keeping it real".... all the way to the bank (where is the review of the new Chris Rock movie - looks like it stinnnks).

No mention of Farley and Spade ??!! Tommy Boy, Black sheep et al were the only true "dumb buddy" movies in recent years !! Fat man in a little coat from Tommy boy was their "finest" hour. All the rest you mention are just evidence of "dumb" humour movies. When it comes down to it, that Disney movie with Spade and Goodman - i think it was called "In search of Farley" - was the last Dumb buddy movie ? Waynes World, Dumb 'n Dumber, Pie etc. all included dumb buddy moments but the plots ranged widely over the "Gross out" Comedy genre. Didn't Jerry Lewis make a career outta this ?

Just think Ren and Stimpy "Log". Record. Emulate the professionals. Track. Plod. For future reference most of these attacks can be trapped by simple rerouting toward honeypot systems and careful flood planning redirecting specified traffic. Consider your arse kicked. Damn well contact the flooding-domain providers and insist on source address-spoof protection as default behaviour. Contact your access providers to see if they can filter or provide feedback/further logs. You have time - let the guy hang himself. RTFM. Post the progress. Enjoy the vacation. Bring back some balls.
