Yes, everyone should start moving config files to XML just like Jabber! But DO NOT put all configuration in a single file! That's asking for trouble.
Its likely that the File Statndard will eventually include keeping config files in the same install directory of the cooresponding app (excluding system configs of course) with only a link existing in the/etc directory. This is how help and executable files are done (or at least supposed to be done). So I expect config files will move in this direction eventually too. The nice thing about this is that we will eventually be able to seperate the OS, Apps and Data on three seperate partitions each independently restorable. Currently the OS and Apps are too intermingled, though Linux is better at it then Windows:)
Can't you see? From the results of this very poll, if people would just vote Their Truth, rather than on fears of a worse evil, their canidate could actually win! Look at the results of this very poll: Nader is only 5% behind! Only 5%! Certianly more then 5% of Gore voters would be willing to vote Nader if they didn't fear the election of Bush.
And to Bush supporters, I say, what are you thinking!!! You want smaller government? Less taxes? More local control? Bush won't give You these things! He'll give in to Big Business, taking it from you! That's a campaign promise you can count on!
Wise up people. Look at the facts. Look at the history. What have these two parties and their candidates really accomplished in the last 30 years? How great is the USA these days? Once upon a time we went to the moon. Once we established equal rights for race and gender. Once we strengthened the rights of our workers to unionize. Now...now it seems everything is for sale, our land, our dreams, our lives.
Shameful. I can see the sign now: "Land of the free. Home of the Brave." Stamped with the bid red label: "Sold Out".
I've been talking about the neo-luddite movement for years, about 10 in fact. (Which makes me wonder who coined the term sice I've been using it for so long.) What is being refered to here is really but a shadow to the real thing, which you can expect to start showing up in about 10 years from now or so. And it will be a REAL problem compared to the propagandic ludditism discussed here. Don't get me wrong, despite what many commenters here are saying, I am not a luddite. But the bottom line is that our social structure is not prepared for the technological reality with which we will soon be faced. In about a decade intelligent programs/robots will become a factor and human jobs will begin to drop like flys. Though this technology could serve us all, as it should, it will instead serve only the rich. And from there, well, its obvious that a neo-luddite revolution is in the making.
Thank you for bring up the luddite issue. As for all you nay sayers: Didn't your mom ever teach you that if don't have something nice to say then...
seems youall left out the most obvious one, and the one most likely to succeed: taos' elate! this is the platform amiga has adopted. granted that they currently run it hosted on linux, but that wont be typically neccessary for running native amiga/elate programs once they are developed. of course elate as a stand alone os isn't as mature as linux for running on standard pcs, but elate makes a greate embedded os.

Why don't they just add it to the Inernational Space Station? At the very least they'd have more closet space :)
