"...chances are good that all your stuff will still be there when you get home from work that evening, because most people who notice that it is unlocked will not steal anything for fear of getting caught and jailed."

My lord, I certainly hope that's not why it would still be there. I would hope it's because the people who notice realize that it would suck if someone did it to them. If laws are the reason that people don't do bad things, we are royally screwed.

I guess the people whose charge it is to prevent piracy aren't doing a very good job of putting a human face on it. When the people who speak out, the people who stand to lose something, are filthy stinking rich or faceless corporations, it is very hard to identify with them. It's hard to think, "If I download this recording (which I probably wouldn't buy legitimately anyway) without paying for it, the millionaire artist isn't getting the extra $0.15. It would suck if I didn't get that $0.15 that I'm not even counting on." And even harder is, "That evil company with billions in the bank which is only turning over $0.15 to the artist is being deprived of five bucks they probably wouldn't have gotten anyway."

I'm not saying it's right, but this is the perception. As a history teacher of mine was fond of saying, "Perception is Reality." If the RIAA wants to have an impact they are going to have to change perceptions.

This isn't a particularly good analogy. In the case of abandonware, not only have they tried to sell the software, they did, and at some point decided that it wasn't cost effective to publish it anymore. So there obviously is no reason for them not to have it out there - it was out there.

Jon, you're not making much sense. First off, you say that a score and code aren't equivalent because the algorithm wasn't "designed to evoke emotion and thought." I'm a gamer, and I can tell you that there are quite a few games out there that were designed to evoke both emotion and thought.
You also say that because the "code is merely a series of instructions", it is not art. What, then, is a musical score? and how can you protect the final product without protecting the source?
One last thought - what does it matter whether code is art or not? There's plenty of free speech that isn't art. The whole point of the first amendment was to protect political speech (which isn't to say it doesn't, wasn't intended to or shouldn't protect anything else)! I don't know about you, but I don't find most political speech very artistic, clever lies notwithstanding.

I am not from california, but I am from a state that has relatively sane drug laws (MN). I have spent time in California. I have never, ever heard of laced weed. IMHO, You are a twit-troll.

  16. Re:What you can do about it on Just Say No To Reading About Drugs · · Score: 2

Those are not your only choices. The libertarian party is about as pro-freedom as you can get. They certainly are in favor of drug reform. Or there's the Green Party, who are more leftist. If Jesse Ventura's Independence party is available where you are, they support more fiscal responsibility as well as social tolerance (ie letting up on the drug war, gay rights, etc). There are many parties like these, and you should be able to find one that fits your thought if you do some research. It is true that they are all pretty much unlikely to win office, but it does happen. Even if they don't win, they do at least have a chance of changing the debate. If they get 5% of the vote, they qualify for Federal money next time around. And then there are options within the parties. Here in Saint Paul, we have a pro-legalization (marijuana, at least) state representative in Andy Dawkins. He's a Democrat. The governor of New Mexico is quite vocally pro-legaliztaion, and he's a republican. And if you live in a caucus state, you can go to the caucuses and (given the low turnout that is commonplace) have a pretty fair chance of changing party policy. Something most people don't want to deal with is the incremental nature of American Democracy. However, the greatest journey begins with but a single step. But to say that the democrats and republicans are pro-drug war, therefore there's no point in voting, is a lame excuse for laziness and apathy. If every single stoner in this country voted, and voted based on legalization, I guarantee you the drug war would end in less than five years.

There are two ways to measure which lake is largest: volume and surface area. By either measure, the Caspian Sea is the largest lake in the world. However, you specifically mention freshwater (which the mars water does not appear to be). By volume, Lake Baikal is the largest in the world, containing 20% of the world's liquid fresh water. Lake Superior is the largest by surface area. Lake Michigan is not larger than Lake Superior by either measure. In fact, Superior contains more water than the rest of the great lakes combined, and then some. And it has a tide of several feet, not the inches mentioned elsewhere.
