I understand where the patch is for Q1 to make it work under SDL, but... Where's this 3d wrapper? Dunno who Brian is!

  2. Star Wars prequels and Quake similarity on Star Wars: AOTC Reviews Pour In · · Score: 1

It just occurred to me that these Star Wars prequels and the Quake series so far have something interesting in common: They're both essentially technology demos lacking significant dramatic depth.

    Consider:

Lucasfilm is pioneering new ways to make films digitaly, and new ways to view them digitally. They're also setting trends in computer generated actors. You better believe they're planning to use this technology for making non-Lucas movies.

Quake constantly sets the benchmark in 3D graphics engine technology. They throw together an admittedly fun, if shallow, game release it, then license it like crazy to developers who actually make more dramatic games.

So I expect Episode 2 to be fun, but I'm not going to expect a lot of drama that makes me leave the theater thinking.

  3. Cheap console + MMORPG = $$$ on XBox Released · · Score: 1

an ethernet connection on a console isn't some gaming messiah. there are currently no games which i could see benefitting from this on any console, nor any in the future. same with having a hard drive.

Holy cow... There is one very powerful incentive to include these features on a console. MMORPGs are very popular, and have turned out to produce quite a bit of revenue. I haven't played it, but apparently Phantasy Star Online is very popular. The first company to bring a real MMORPG to a wide user base is going to win BIG!

Consoles have a far larger market penetration than PCs when talking about the gaming market. There's a huge untapped potential here for revenue. And frankly, I think MMORPG will be the killer app for online console gaming.

  4. Kohan fills the bill on Making Strategy Games with...Strategy? · · Score: 1

Kohan fills the bill nicely here, and there's even a Linux version. The concept of supply is taken into account. Your troops only heal within a certain radius of your cities. If a city is under attack (siege), your nearby troops are no longer "supplied".

Additionally, there's a huge variety of decisions to be made how to organize your troop elements. What kind of main unit to use? What supporting unit types?

The map also limits how close together cities can be, so you really can't stockpile up in an arms race like you can in most games.

There's more to this, but I'm not an expert at it yet... ;)
