Ummm... usually DSP means "signal comes in, goes straight to output after a computation", hence "signal". Sure, you can use a DSP for other functions, but it's usally a waste. 3D stuff requires retreived computation, i.e. retreiving the state of the rendered picture-buffer, which is not usally associated with DSP. DSP chips also have special instructions for audio processing. 3D does not a DSP make. Usually, it's SIMD you're looking for.

DSP!=3D. Future 3D stuff is all SIMD, baby, and SIMD can but not necessarily be used for DSP functions.

The point of Echelon is that our united TCP/IP network, the Internet, presents a weakness - now that the network is completely united, it can be monitored. That's why it's a good thing for future IP devices to use private IP's instead of gobally routable numbers.

That's also why Carnivore was developed. If you're using a private IP network, you can't trace inside it from the outside (duh). You have to be inside. Gee, sound familiar? And don't get me started on CALEA.

These opinions do not reflect those of my employer.

What you say doesn't make any sense. If signal 11 had 600 karma (not 700, as he was claiming), then 300 karma is half as good as signal 11, the most notorious karma whore. That's not a failure on my book.

Secondly, you are a troll. Enoch Root is an admitted troll (a while back, on k22320inchfan). Signal 11 never admitted he was a troll.

Cross-post this to k22320inchfan with confirming posts from Enoch Root and Signal 11 and I'll believe you. (Keep in mind that you can log in multiple users on slashdot.org, www.slashdot.org, web.slashdot.org, and beta.slashdot.org).

Well, the plus one bonus is gone from normal accounts and back only to the karma whores. The user info number thing is very interesting too - for instance, it's possible to tell that I'm not really siggy because my user number isn't 7608. (Bonus points to the first person who can read well enough to tell that my user name is different).

I've cracked the code. You have to read every other paragraph seperately. Let's look at two paragraphs here:

No presidential candidate has ever made technology a serious campaign issue, unless it's to warn about sex online or to urge the distribution of V-chips and blocking software to protect children from techno-driven culture. Only a handful *snip*

Fertility drugs are a perfect metaphor for -- and a warning to the world -- of America's insane approach to complicated issues like this one. Critics are quickly dismissed as Luddites or simpletons. In the U.S., couples are applauded for bringing six, seven, even eight children into the world at once even though *snip*

These two paragraphs are completely unrelated. Hasn't Katz ever been tought how to write a paper? Or is this some new-fangled writing-style that one learns from writing for Wired? I don't get it. I'd read the whole thing if it had some sort of flow from front to back, but the article reminds me of some of my worst college papers. I'm certain there's some flow there, in your mind, and you might even reply and elucidate a bit of the clarity that never got expressed in this paper.

On an on-topic refute, the statement:

Individualism and "wierdness" could show up in the new human map, along with tendencies towards anger, dissent, and bad skin.

No, Jon, they couldn't. Those have been proven to be mostly environmental factors. There are a few mental disorders that lead to those, but nothing in the genetic code. Did you do any research on modern psychology before writing this?

To quote the article, "If this kind of automated hyperlinking is ruled illegal, the Internet is going to grind to a halt," said Ira Rothken, legal counsel for MP3Board.com. But that sounds just like a search engine to me, and we had that kind of thing even before the web, with FTP and Gopher searches. In fact, pretty much everything on the 'net is a hyperlink. What if I put together a page with every single live IP address on it? I'd be linking to an awful lot of illegal content. Same with a phonebook - because it lists everything, it lists the prostitutes too.

To quote the article again, " The original suit is requesting that the judge clarify the requirements of how MP3Board should monitor its site for illegal content, grant an injunction to block the RIAA's attempts to shut down the company, and award the company monetary damages for the recording industry's interference in its business. " - but does google monitor it's search engine for illegal content? Of course not! This is rediculous.

This is the latest round of legal fighting between the two companies. The original suit is requesting that the judge clarify the requirements of how MP3Board should monitor its site for illegal content, grant an injunction to block the RIAA's attempts to shut down the company, and award the company monetary damages for the recording industry's interference in its business. I hope the judge grants it.
