  1. Re:Shared Calendar Backend? on Zimbra Collaboration Suite Launched · · Score: 1

I'm in the exact same boat, a one man IT shop working for a small non-profit that wants to be able to share calendars. It sounds so easy that I was sure I could find something that would work. Haven't found a solution yet that doesn't cost per user plus the cost of a server.

  2. Re:Online backup? - Capacity on Online Backup Solutions? · · Score: 1

Ummm, first off, you don't have to back up 40GB just because you have a 40GB disk. Do you need to back up all of your OS files and program files every night? Probably not. Make one disk image after you have everything installed, compress it and put in on a DVD and store it someplace safe. Same goes with your audio/video collection. How often does it change? When you get some more, back up only the new stuff.

That data that needs backed up is the data that changes regularly.

I run a small office with about 20 computers and 3 servers. Ignoring all of the program installs and what not, guess how much data we have that needs backed up regularly: about 2GB.

Add on top of that, how much actually gets changed every day? Not that much. We usually end up uploading a changeset less than 100MB everynight.

Compare this to swapping tapes or CD's nightly and then trying to keep track of all of them, I'll gladly pay $20 a month to get rid of that hassle!

Plus, its extrmemly easy to get old versions of a document when a user accidently overwrites it- just download the copy from yesterday from the online backup site.

I don't trust/want something to auto generate my sql tables and such based on my objects. That leads to problems, since the queries can't be tuned or maybe you don't get what you expect.

And what does this have to do with Hibernate? Last I checked it doesn't generate SQL schemas for you (although you can get an add on to do it if you want.)

Also, you can tell it the exact SQL expression to use if you find that its not doing something right or you need to "tune" it. Of all the times I've used Hibernate ojects, I've never had to do this.

  6. But what about the MIS students on Will CS Students Switch From Microsoft? · · Score: 2, Insightful

It may be somewhat true that CS students are being turned off by MS, but so what? For years, most CS programs have been teaching LISP and look how far that has made it in the commercial world. What really matters is what the MIS students are learning. Most of the MIS students I know at my school think Visual Basic rocks and barely know what Linux is. They think free software is the cracked software they can download off the dorm network for free. These are the people that are going to be put into positions to buy software for large companies in the future, and I don't see most of them adopting Linux anytime soon.

  7. Real dangers of Biotech on Biotech and the Environment · · Score: 2

Most of the discussion I've seen so far has centered on what the harnfull health effects bio-engineered crops will have on people. No one has mentioned some of the other possibilities that GM crops introduce. For exmaple, imagine a great new strain of GM corn that grows in conditions normal corn can't. The corn is introduced into poor nation and helps the plight of the poor and hungry people. But wait, there's one condition. This new corn doesn't produce seeds. In fact, you can't plant the corn unless you by it from one of the huge agri-business corporations (and some of you think Microsoft in a monopoly... you should check out the agriculture business) and pay them royalties for the patented genes. Pretty soon these parts of the world beoome dependent on the huge multinational for the only crop the can withstand the draught/blight/pests/etc of the region...
