What is he talking about? Am i the only one out there that still likes X? check this out:
Worse yet, no one in the Unix community seems to be able to agree on any kind of GUI standard, so you have an explosion of window managers, desktops, file managers, and widget toolkits which are mostly inoperable with each other.
I personally don't see that as "worse." I see that as giving users the choice of desktop managers. Motif is beautiful, and i can put up with Gnome. I used to run KDE and it was tolerable. The thing is, at the root, X is X and all your binaries will run on any of them. The way i look at it, you even GET to pick what your desktop looks like. Basically, the impression i got from from this article is that ol' Monty wants to run Windows 95 on Unix! he wants a standard DE and i have to stand up and disagree. And if you still don't like X, run lynx and vi. that's the beauty of the *nixes. You don't HAVE to do anything you don't want to. That's why i like it, and that's why i use it.
Also, I'm a vegetarian (vegan, actually). Why? Because in comparison to the quick, clean death of the shelter, most animals' encounter with humans is bloody and violent.
ok, all i have to say it wow. And she continued this for pages. this has what to do with the story? Anyway, i refuse to blow this up into a vegan vs. carnivore war, so i'm going back to the subject: you gotta be 18 to rent bloddy game.
I agree 100%. kids + bloody violent game = bad news bears. Especially considering how much better and more realistic video games are getting, i don't think that 13 year old kids who can't get into Scary movie should be able to see stuff like this. Call me a little old fashioned, but I think kids mature too fast now adays. And that's why you have 10 year olds bringing guns into school. (sorry, i really should stay away from that subject too. i'm just gonna piss everybody off today:)
kids should value their kid-hood. go outside and play. ride a bike. don't sit inside and rot watching terribly bloody video games all your life.
hell, maybe we should ban ALL video games until the age of 10 or so (ok, and i just pissed off the geeks too now. I'd better quit)
These kids are our future. They're gonna have to take care of me when i'm old. i want them to at least have a firm grip on reality so that i don't get Euthanized as per Death Race 2000 just because they find it entertaining.
sorry, the coffe machine was broken in the office this morning. it's felt like 7:00 am for the entire morning. but now it's afternoon, so i'm normal again. *AHEM* anyway, AOL was all i had except for the local BBS scene. I BBS'd my life away. any someone brought up a good point that BBSs really were about as underground as you get. Ah the good old days of wardialing to find a place to start, and then playing usurper for days at a time. I check on some old numbers and they still work. kewl. I even saw someone still running a::choke:: WILDCAT board. lol -Superb0wl
but i hate it when this happens. You get 20 million people on napster and it gets in the public eye and it starts to sucks. Anyone else here remember when (pardon the blashpemy) aol was cool? back in 1992? before it even offered web access? 20 million users later it sucks. balls.
Why can't the geeks of the net keep anything underground anymore? Last year at school, people with the intelligence level of mousepads would come up to me and ask me to help them "fix their napster." I think as far as something like this goes, if you don't understand it, don't use use it.
ps i switched to gnutella months ago. It's a little better than napster.

Countries can do whatever they like with their TLDs. That doesn't explain why we should "open up a few more"....
That's exactly what i'm talking about. Countries can do whatever they want, but they really shouldn't. the entire purpose of the TLDs are to seperate the internet into categories. I know someone already mentioned that people get.net's because the.com is already taken. I still think that unless you run your business out of tonga, you shouldn't register a.to. This is EXACTLY why we need more TLDs because.com is too broad, along with and since.org and.net are filling up fast, we need more TLDs to work better. a.gnu would be more that just kr4d 1337. it would make an easy way to get to what you want. www.gnu could have a nice little index page of the free software out there. I think we need to tighten up the domain registration thing. I mean, what would you expect at www.whitehouse.com Certainly not what's there. Same thing with www.com. shouldn't that be something like an official WWW page or an index of Companies online or something? nope, it's the "worlds biggest online music provider." that makes a lot of sense. People try to fool users with misleading domain names, and i think that more TLDs would help curb this practice. -Superb0wl
Kids in the 00's (how is that pronouced again?:)had better excel at something. The 60's had drugs, 70's had disco, 80's had.....shitty music and 90s were the MTV Generation. 2000 is the online decade. Kids have to have something to do since they can't just sit around and smoke pot and reminisce about "the good old days." So they are forced into the internet. I don't think this is good. Kids are already discrespectful. I remmeber when i was like 8 if i saw someone is high school i was in awe. and one my friends brothers was in college! he didn't even live at home! wow. but now all kids do is live in their virtual worlds. My little bro has more virtual friends than real friends. sorta sad.
oh well. i guess it's time to quit my rant. damn whippersnappers..... -Superb0wl
I was wondering what the word "Beaurocracy" meant when one of my co-workers mentioned it today, so i looked it up. here's a quote:
"ICANN is not considering TLD proposals.... (We) are still considering the policies for considering them," Dyson said in an email message to Wired News.
I say, go for it, quickly. People are already starting to abuse national TLDs, like the.tv.to and.is. I thing we really should open up a few more. I could easily deal with a.gnu address. I call dibs on www.sex.gnu. hehe i can't even image the pengiun pr0n that would pop up there:)
As sad as it is, technology is what people do now. I remember the days of running through the woods and playing cops and robbers on bikes when i was a kid. Those glory days are gone now. My little brother (he's 12) doesn't go outside. Ever. All he does is waste his life on video games and computers. And it's not like his friends are doing anything different, either. He goes to "LAN parties" every few weeks, where a bunch of kids all bring their PCs together and play quake for hours. It's sortof sad, but that's what happening.
Ever since i ditched my cell phone last year, i've felt freedom like i've never felt. it's so great to be able to park on the beach with no phone, no pc, no tv and just relax without anyone being able to get ahold of you, but it's getting harder and harder to do. Some hotels are even offering broadband connections now, which is nice, but it makes you think.::wipes a tear::
on the other hand, i read slashdot for lesisure at work. it's a nice break:)
I checked out Mac OS Rumors just because i'm at work for another hour and i'm bored. I just thought this particular line was amusing: Cost for the CD version of the Public Beta [of MacOSX] is expected to be nominal -- no more than $25 US. lol
someone goes and does something GREAT like this. No we have access to much much better ways that drug lords and tetris to waste time with our palms......(of course besides the old fashioned way to waste time with your palm.....that causes blindess)

Web Site "Lock-In"
·
· Score: 1
change it so it's not a meta refresh of 0. give it like 4 seconds or so. Or, the better way to do it would be configure apache to make your default page index.shtml instead of index.html. Or SSI parse every page (um...nevermind. bad idea).
What I do, is write a gateway page on index.html, then let the user choose where do go to get to my site. Whether they want the:
frames page
no frames page
flash page
flash + frames page
javascript + frames page
javascript + flash + frames page
javascript + flash + frames + 1024x768 res + SSI + microsoft ASP + XML + live streaming video + RISC optomized assemly code + AOL compatable page
The one good thing about locking-in, new-window-spawning, javascript-using sites is they create a fun game when you're bored and have a T1. have two people (we did this in the dorms) both click 3 links deep into a pr0n site and then try to click back out to your start page. This can be incredibly tough, and monopolize hours of time. for the handicapped, use a dial up.
ok, so defending my american heritage makes me a racist. it's cool, i understand. Anyway, this isn't an issue of race, it's an issue of jurisdiction. The FBI obviously can't tell the japansese, or the chinese, or the french, or the german what to do. I wasn't saying that "the Japanese are known to be an evil race, consisting of thieves (they stole the Chinese character set and now call it Kanji) and rapists (hentai)!" All i'm saying is the simple fact that if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself, and the same thing applies to this situation. The FBI can't trust ANYONE (local cops, foreign police, etc.) to do their jobs for them. I reiterate my original post: Go FBI! (Flame all you want, i like it:)) -Superb0wl
i've always wondered what the correct way to end a parenthesis set with a smiley is, because it happens quite frequently. I almost always insert funny remarks into a serious post in parenthesis, and i like to set it off with a smiley. so is it: 1. (This is funny:)) 2. (This is funny:) 3. (This is funny):) I like #1, personally.
same thing with periods, ya know:).
wahtever. this is so far offtopic anyway. the matrix thing was funny. It killed almost an hour at work. I'm so bored:)
It actually uses a polymer that emits light when voltage is applied to it. By coloring the polymer red, green, and blue, and spraying it on a base with an opposing charge, you have a color display. It's a solid-state deal.
Close, but not really. These things aren't like christmas tree bulbs that are really white and just painted. They develop different polymers that actually emit blue light. Since blue is so high on the spectrum, it's sorta hard to find something that will emit low enough blue that you can see it. That's why it was such a big deal when they came out with blue LEDs a few years ago. if you look at a blue LED when it's off, it's clear, not blue. same with green. That's also why the blue has such a short life-span. Red is low freq. so you can power them for years. green takes more power. blue takes even more. -Superb0wl
