  1. Line of Sight? on Earthlink Launches Fixed Wireless ISP Service · · Score: 1
What I dont quite understand is the following:

Availability To get EarthLink High Speed Internet Fixed Wireless Access, you need a clear, unobstructed view of the nearest tower in your area

Does that mean if I cant look out a window from the top story of my building and SEE one of thier towers, I am out of luck?

Alanis Morisette said it best. "Isn't it Ironic, dont you think" I havent gotten any details on it yet..but where I am it is spreading pretty fast. Seems like symantec and sarc are being hit hard.

  3. How about the big 5 (or 4....) on Ethics In Computer Consulting · · Score: 3

I am a computer consultant for a small firm who regulary partners with the big guys. Often Anderson, Deloitte, E&Y will subcontract to us. Time after time I see these companies bringing people into the project with little and no experience. These companies expect their consultants to learn of the job, while billing several hunderd dollars an hour. To me this is one of the bigger problems in the world of consulting. On top of that it seems like companies use the big 5 merely because of thier size. Why is this? What will it take for company management to realize that bigger is not always better? My experience has shown me that the better consultants go off on their own. Bottom line: Just like politicians the companies that are the most powerful, are usually the most unethical

  4. Re:Does anyone really do this? on Baan IVc/V - The First Open-Source ERP? · · Score: 1
There are quite a few very good reasons to use ERP. The advantages gained by such a system as SAP, BAAN, JDEdwards, or PeopleSoft are seen best in the largest companies. ERP's allow corporations to consolidate information into a single database. Read Data integration.

ERP's try to take the place of a companies current set of applications. These applications that they have are usually integrated by a custom set of programs, and are limited in the data they can share.

ERP's Have come a long way since the days of the mainframe, and AS/400 green screens. Both SAP, and JDE have the ability to run on many different systems in a GUI mode. For example, JDE's client runs on NT, but the server can be as/400, HP, AS/400, or NT. (it just a LOT of C code). The ironic thing is that most ERP's have been built by piecing together different software packages and hooking it all together. SAP started as a manufacturing/distribution package that has grow to become a ERP, while JDE started as a finnancial tool, and grew from there. I believe PeopleSoft was a HR tool in the beginning. Sadly many these projects fail, and cost millions, usually because there are too many over priced and under trained consultants.
