I have been working in the LAWSON ERP environment for two years now and this is how I perceive a OSS ERP system would work:
1. Get the base of the ERP project running. 2. Start a consulting company in your area and market this product to medium to small sized companies along with the consulting services to offer customization, training, change management, etc. 3. Any modifications, additions, fixes are posted back to the ERP project. 4. Use the ERP to start a ASP (Application Service Provider). This would allow you to focus in a specific industry like Construction. You could offer a full blown ERP to smaller customers for a monthly fee. 5. The ERP will get validity with small to medium sized companies, and can expand into the Fortune 500. It was stated earlier that a company is buying a relationship with a ERP vendor. The relationship you are offering is a local consulting company that has a cutting edge ERP system. ERP can be exciting when you get into automation of warehouses and inventory control.
I realize these are generalizations without the detail, but anyone is interested in persuing this idea, please email me.
