Sterling Huges' "PHP developer's cookbook" is simply exellent. It is from SAMS. It is really well written and throuhout. I would like a similar book on python. (I'd also like pythons online documentation to bee as good as PHPs, but I think that's a bit offtopic;) )
I got SAMS "teach yourself python in 24 hours" and while the text is good, the screendumps are horrible. The code snippets are fine, but I need a magnefying glass to read the the screendumbs
Apple is first and foremost a hardware company. They tried to let other companies build Macs but they gave Apple too much competition, so Apple killed that deal off. Apple cannot survive from only selling software. I have used Mac from 1991-1999. I would go back the second OS X could run on an intel platform, but... i am afraid Apple has no incentive to do that.

Why on earth should wallid HTML be a goal in itself? If I as a company decide that only 90% of the web population is interesting to me, because this either speeds up development or let me do stuff the standard does not approve of, then I take the risk that the remaining 10% will be dissatisfied. And so what? If they were not going to spend money on me anyway, why would I spend money on them?
Valid HTML is no more an end in itself than open souce code is. It has to pay of in the form of more money/mind shares, what ever or perhaps pay of in long term maintance.
I hope they fix the monitor problems for the translated versions. The english version sets the monitor's refresh rate to the highest possible. But some drivers have not been updated for Win2k or XP and the monitor will then use the default driver. The default driver's max refresh rate is 120Hz and that will fry you monitor if it can only handle up to 100Hz.
Off topic perhaps, but I just had to buy a new monitor this week, and I shall gladly pay some slashdot karma to prevent this from happening to someone else (and maybe that'll give me some REAL karma:-) )
your above mentioned reasons a through c (well d) are just and probably correct
If analog modems weren't very popular, you wouldn't see walls full of them in computer stores. And yes, there is a local computer store here with a wall full of hundreds of analog modems
I do not see any stores with walls full of analog modems. They are very much away from stores where I live. The only company that produce analog modems in my contry is almost bankrupt. Hence my question. I had not considered laptops.
And if you want to see Chow Yun-Fat handle a Chainsaw go watch Tiger on the beat. Also a terrific movie if you want to see how to handle a knife or get a health recipe.
What is it like to be mostly known, loved and adored for movies you did 10-15 years ago?
Most of the questions here on slashdot are concerned with the trilogy or the poster says he/she (probably he) first saw you in Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness and has been a fan ever since. Not many posters say they first discovered you in Brisco.
My guess is that most of us are guys who watched ED2 or AoD when we were teenagers and that we long for that time again and hence want you guys to make ED4 for nostalgic reasons. And on that note... when oh when will you make a movie with my other teenage heroes John Woo and Chau Yun Fat? -cheers Christian
I don't know about the internet, but the rule of thumb for TV is: if >20% of a group (a school class, an office...) has seen the first part of a series the eiever mass will increase else it will decrease (I said rule of thumb).
With the internet and everyone having email the equivalece would probably be something about how many % will forward it to friends...

As far as I can see this is for analouge modems only. Is this still so intensively needed that it is woth that amount of money?
