We have MS office at uni. (We also have staroffice, but nobody uses it)

People are lazy, dumb, senile and stupid. They will write their essay (all in 10 point times new roman, might as well save it as a text file!), save as Word 2000, and take it home. They then ask their computer "savvy" neighbour how to edit the essay. The neighbour installs a pirate copy of word XP on their machine, and they use it.

This doesnt gain MS any money though. However as the installed base of word is so high on students machines, and more up-to-date (and incompatable) then the uni machines, the uni has to upgrade.

Uncrackable product activation et. al. in microsoft's products will stop this, however the mindset (think Word Processor, think Word, think Microsoft) that is drilled into people from age 8 will take a lot to change.

Who can create a better desk, a hobo of the street with a $100,000 workshop, or a 15th century carpenter? Tools in the right hands can help a lot, but they are only tools. It doesnt matter if you use a fancy electric screwdriver or a penknife, as long as you get the job done. When you have a non-existent budget to work with, you want the biggest bang for buck. A top of the line DV editing PC, with premiere, built yourself (naturally) is still cheaper then a mid-range mac, and twice as fast. If I'm rendering a complex 60 frame transition, I'd rather get 5fps then 2fps any day.

Final cut pro is $1,000, You can get the entire pc premiere package for not much more.

If you have money to burn, get a proper NLE system with uncompessed video and real time everything. If you have no money, go for a PC. If you have a little bit of money, a mac is nice.

BSD & public domain dont restrict *DEFAULT LEVEL*
GPL restricts rights to restrict rights of other people using modifications
    Copyright restrict rights to copy
    EULA restrict rights to use.
