IMHO, it is possible to write good censorware that uses a combination of black lists, acceptable sites, and PICS ratings, with an OSS-like list of blocking rules, that allows children to read information on AIDS and breast cancer, but blocks them from the redlight districts, to a reasonably good extent. AFAIK, none of them are currently 'good' enough by our (/.) standards, and I dunno of any open source one.

Then again ask and ye shall receive. Squid can be used for this purpose and itself has a couple of pointers to publicly maintained porn sites lists. Open source porn blocking.

Admittedly this would require a minute amount of overhead to administer. But hey.

"INAXenobioligist, but I've always thought that any intelligent alien life would quite likely be similar to us, despite the underlying biology. Two locomotive limbs, two manipulative limbs and most of the sense organs located at the top of the body for greatest efficiency. It's hard to think of a more advantageous setup."

Tragic lack of imagination there old boy. Personally I'd prefer to come from Elephantine stock. 4 locomotive limbs, 1 (extremely strong and extremely sensitive) manipulative limb, no natural predators. Maybe not, I keep running out of hands already. 8 (or so)manipulative limbs, 2 hunting limbs, incredibly good eyesight, the only problem with that is being a good swimmer (giant squid BTW). The assumption that humans are the most highly efficient beings is grossly antho-centric.

The main problem is that we have too little to work on. A dataset of one isn't large enough. However if you look at the more successful (and potentially more intelligent) species you have a high degree of variation just here on earth.

Elephant, Squid, Dolphin. All successful, all potentially quite intelligent. 2 are mammals, 2 are aquatic, 2 have limbs. All share success in their niche, wide roaming biohabitat, and communication.

Then again this arguement can never be answered until we meet some bug-eyed freaks, or one of the other species on the planet can convince us of their intelligence, which as a general rule, we won't accept.

You can't risk that. If the NT machine is screwy, redoing the installation actually isn't such a bad option. If you have reasonable documentation, you can get the box back up in an hour. Good luck keeping as good docs with a Linux box. I use both systems in my company, and it is impossible to keep a Linux doc, you make too many changes. A NT box is really straightfoward and has less tweaking.

From my own experience I tend to find linux boxes easier to keep track of. Personally I tend a bunch'o'boxes including a linux farm, each member taking about 2 hours to rebuild.

The point is these are production machines, you put them together in the same way so you can rebuild them. You keep the docs on them, so when you have to rebuild one it will be identical to the rest of the farm, which it needs to be

When it comes down to it a box is a box. Whether it's an NT or Sun or Linux box doesn't really matter
