Instead of relying on GPS to "go home" the bird should be logging information from an inertial guidance system and follow that track back until it can acquire the navigation signals it needs. Infrared terrain recognition would also be a viable fall-back.
One question that needs to be answered is how the Iranians knew the bird was there in the first place.
