  1. "Intelligence" in Robots on NASA and AI Testing · · Score: 1

On the whole, Deep Space 1 is just a robot with some extremely cool sensors and actuators in an adverse environment. Until now, all such robots launched by NASA have been, at best, remote control "toys" (albeit extremely cool ones). This new software makes the first jump by NASA from remote control to teleautonomous.

This new field that NASA has entered, teleautonomous robotics, allows ground controllers to spend less time actually controlling the robot saving some serious cash for the NASA budget. This will allow even cooler robots to be built in the future, such as their proposed Mission to Pluto.

  2. Slashdot stories on www.redhat.com on Red Hat IPO Rumors on news.com · · Score: 1

The best part about this rumor being posted on Slashdot is that the Redhat homepage will carry the story. Does it really matter if its true?

If Redhat were to go public, they might survive. Their business model allows them to profit from other people's work, so their product need not be in question. They would need to expand their support services to the point where that is the companies primary source of income. That is their product. Not Red Hat Linux.

  3. Not a fair test on Slate Takes on Linux · · Score: 1

Both of our unfortunate authors tried to install RedHat 5.1 on Pentium 133 that was not put together by a major manufacturer. I'm willing to bet that the computer was someone's home jobbie since the on-motherboard IDE controller was disabled and instead, a Sound Card IDE interface was used. What kind of crap is that? Modern computers plug their ATAPI cd-roms into something sensible so that the bootable CD-Rom option can work. By making this mistake, they effectively dated this article to using Last Year's Linux Redhat 5.1 and a computer from Three Years Ago.

I realize that Linux can run on a 386 with 4 megs of ram (less, if you're really good), but for reality's sake, lets assume a base machine of a Pentium 200 for Joe Average User, and for the technoGeeks out there, figure out your parts before you build your system. And don't complain that it won't install if you had your CD-Rom plugged into the wrong interface. (Personally, I wouldn't even admit that I had that kind of problem.)

Shouldn't a technogeek be using Debian or Slackware for the added challenge?

  4. Red Hat and KDE on Is Red Hat the Next Microsoft? · · Score: 1

As long as Red Hat is willing to change their mind on big issues, then they are NOT monopolizing a la MS. They've seen the light on KDE and are putting it in their 6.0 release, so they understand that if they didn't do it, it may still be good. Of course, as long as the software is Open Source, we, the users, are still in good shape.

  5. Two heads are better than one. on BeOS, Win95 and Dual Video Cards · · Score: 1

I ran 2 17s for a while and I must say its really nice. Now that I have a 21 on my desk, I can say that it really is a toss up. On a coolness scale, of course 2 17s is better, but the trade-off is you've gotta run win98. I couldn't make it work at all for linux. The 21 gives mountains of room, but the added physical room of 2 moniters is a real plus.

What I miss most is the ability to have a browser on the right screen, a development ide on the left screen and executables running all over the place.

IMHO, the 2 17s is better. What I really want now is 2 21s. Once you use two monitors, you can't go back.
