I think the key is to realise that as your child grows/develops s/he is going to need differing amounts of supervision. You want them to learn to be responsible "internet citizens" and that means taking care of themselves. But you need something that will protect them whilst they learn.

Maybe there is a genuine need for a database program (and I use this term here loosely) that provides an interace as easy to use as spreadsheet? Not every user is a
eXtraSheet is a tool which allows you to capture this kind of data. At least one very large investment bank uses it extensively for this kind of thing.

Given that the book isn't really about computers or the Internet, but about economics, perhaps a more reliable review might be found in a publication more closely aligned with that subject. "The Economist" gives the book a glowing review (available to subscribers only). Some readers may even find The Economist to be a more learned journal than Slashdot and therefore more likely to deliver a balanced review.
