I guess at the same time if people on stuck with big companies we would all run MS products on a IBM machine and the only way anyone would connect to the Internet would be through Compuserv or Prodigy. (Think where the Internet would be) I guess to take it even further nobody would embrace new technology. I guess we would still use 8-tracks and no car would be made of fiber glass.
There would be no Linux users and nobody would build their own machines. Nobody would drive Saturn, they would all drive big ol' Fords.
You know I can't tell the difference between copper and gold connectors. I also can't tell the difference between CX and DX options on a Honda Civic. But the fact remains that I need the DX because my neighbor has a CX and I need the gold because my friend has copper.
If they make it better, well we all know that somebody will pay for it. If for nothing else but to out do someone. Kate
If it weren't for the whole anti-trust thing Microsoft would have had to start sponser more to get the same name brand recognition as Coke. Can you imagine the likes of Microsoft Field instead of Fed-Ex Field or instead of the Visa Triple Crown Challenge the Microsoft Challenge. I don't see the likes of Geeks being that involved in that sort of thing. Perhaps a Linux group could sponser a Beowolf Challenge or something;) Kate
With any product if the company survives to continue to support the product you purchased is a bet. Of course in the past it has been a fairly safe bet. You don't expect Ford to go under. However, with the economy now and the businesses that do fold and the ones the currently are worth so much, but don't actually provide a service the bet is more risky. Buying something from a start-up with little to no business plan can be risky. What if rather than being bought out they just fold? I don't have a solution for the support, but with the way things have changed there is a need. When my computer broke six months into warrenty I was able to take it back and get a new one. If that support didn't exist I would have been out a mother board. Not a comfortable feeling. Kate
When are people going to realize that many video games are made for adults. Not for twelve year olds, so keeping the kids away from the games makes perfect sense to me. After all we don't let kids into R rated movies, why would be let them play the equal in a video game? "15% of games made are rated for teen or mature, but they account for 65% of the sales." Was a statistic on CNN about violent games. This must say something about our culture, because I'm sure that most adults aren't the ones buying those games. As teens continue to shoot each other and commit other violent crimes we need to look at our culture. I'm not saying that video games are responsibile, but they need to be looked at as a contributing factor. Kate
Yeah, that's right I'm going to have to go out on Sunday nights. No more quiet night sitting and lusting after Mulder. I'll just have to go find some other guy, maybe it will be you;) Kate
Here I am sitting on the couch reading slashdot and I find out that my laptop could be a health hazard. I'll give my cellphone before my laptop. That is until I can read slashdot from my cell. Kate
Yeah, that's right. I'm a bad ass. I smoke, drink, and use my cell phone at the same time. I guess I'm probably going to die of cancer of the brain, cirosis, and lung cancer all at the same time. Oh well and I'm such an insightful slashdot poster!! kate
Has anyone put a disk in a paper shredder? A good quality one will do disks, cds, mouse pads etc. I suggest that as a fun and fool proof way to get rid of data. Of course it isn't fool proof if you accidently put your hand in it. Kate
I did something call Science Olympiad. Are they treading on toes. I guess they can't have a website either. It would be so cool too, you know how much work geek high school students put into a website. Kate
This may sound dumb, but if those instructions aren't out their kids will probably try all sorts of things that they shouldn't. All I know is before wide-spread internet usage my friends and I had to make up ways to get high. I'm sure they hurt our braincells at lost worse then if we followed instructions. Kate
How about.suc then we could all avoid going to those stupid sites with all the dancing gifs. The sites about how someone thinks their dog should be on the internet and anything else that just is a waste of server space. I mean they have the right to have it up there, but I don't want to have to see it. kate
So if you bet on the horses does that mean you are hoping that god is some sort of equine? Or are you betting that Satan is around and their is no god. I'm a Unitarian, we give money to our congregation. What the hell are we betting on? I guess our odds are pretty bad, since we are betting on a big MAYBE. Kate
If I want to lose all my money online gambling isn't that my option. After all when did it become the governments job to protect the stupid from themselves. Actually it is too bad that, the government has taken that role. Frankly if they don't want people gambling online they should probably take down the auctions too. After all isn't it sort of a gamble that you get exactly what you want? Or that the person on the other end isn't upping their bid. Kate
I always figure that not much goes on in my life so if the government wants to watch me they can go on ahead. Not like I do anything interesting. If someone was reading my e-mail I would feel satisfaction in the fact that they had to, sometimes I don't want to. Kate
I think the artist that embrace digital music are the ones that will succeed. Just after they were showing clips of the meeting they had the singer from Limp Bizkit talking about how he is going to do a Napster tour. I think the idea of if you can't beat them join them.

Not, you. I understand the problem of getting spamed just by one person using my address. It was incrediably annoying. My brother was signing up for porn accounts and using my e-mail. Once or twice my machine crashed when I tried to get my e-mail because of the amount of data. At least I knew who it was and could kick his ass.
What I fail to see as the problem is the fact that you can give out a completely annoying fake address. I have free addresses that I send my mail to. Others use address such as Bill@Microsoft.com or Steve@aol.com. Of course people probably have those e-mail addresses and are completely annoyed at the large amount of e-mail they get that isn't for them. I suppose that the accounts have become inactive. The point is you can make up an address and not worry about the spam.

So I guess if it's radon then my computer really will cause cancer. Oh well, I'm not giving up SlashDot for anything, even my health.

Maybe not secure but really really fun. I suppose you could burn everything afterward too.

I don't see why anyone would want to go after MicroSoft;) After all their business practices reek with ethics.
