  1. Didn't ALpha Centauri run in WINE? on Linux Alpha Centauri Demo · · Score: 1

I thought people had Alpha Centauri running in WINE? I know it was possible to get Starcraft running in WINE. What I really want to see on Linux is Half-Life -- is valve working on a port?

  2. Cube cases aren't new on Cobalt Networks Could Sue Apple Over Cube Design · · Score: 1

Cube cases (or almost cube) cases aren't really anything new -- many server cases that are cubes have been around for years.

  3. CPU Usage on Tighter Video Compression With Wavelets · · Score: 1

Isn't CPU usage one of the main reasons we don't see better compression algorithms in usage on the desktop? I mean I remember when I tried to run the QuickTime StarWars Trailer on my 200MMX it looked like shit. A series of pretty interconnected screenshots. I remember before napster (heh 3 time periods -- before napster, the era of napster, and now postnapster) yamaha tried to introduce the VQF (I think thats it) format and the main reason it didn't catch on was cause it used like 3x as much CPU as MP3 or close to that.

  4. Re:A Serious Question . . . on FreeBSD 4.1 Released · · Score: 1

It source/binary compatibility -- I run a counterstrike server using the Linux binaries on FreeBSD and it works better in FreeBSD than in Linux :) It definetly has a similar feel, both are *nixs. Linux probably has more hardware support just because vendors are starting to come around and release drivers, but FreeBSDs hardware support is definetly good. You'll probably be fine. It will run un the typical PC. Yes it has advantages. Most tests show that its faster than Linux, and I'd have to say its slightly more secure because it has one distribution -- no stupid vendors like Caldera etc.. leaving holes in the default install (no root password eh?). You think your post will incite a riot? Hehe just wait til people read this one. Actually please no flames, I use and love Linux also.

Why ditch the other protcol modules when you could easily just make a module for IMUnified and maintain compatibility with current protocols? This is what Jabber is all about.

  7. AOL/ICQ can work together/Importance of AOL on IMUnified: Playing Red Rover With AOL · · Score: 1

First off, AOL and ICQ can work together (in theory). The way I see it all AOL has to do is make it so you can change the display name in your buddy list (like icq can do basically -- you can change the display name from their nick name in icq to whatever you want), just have their actual screenames be their ICQ#s. On the ICQ side, some code monkey at aol or icq cranks out a hack to run down the database of screenames and assign them each a UIN with their default nickname being their screename, wouldn't be too hard to code I don't think. Also, ICQ support is also being built into AIM now -- try signing on to AIM using your ICQ#/Password -- it works! And you can talk to people on ICQ (although they see html tags which aim uses for formatting, but you can message them). Only problem is that they haven't made an ICQAIM protocol gateway yet -- you can't talk to people who have AIM while your signed on with your ICQ# on AIM.

Also, these numbers about AIM having more people than ICQ are not very reliable if they are going by the number of registered screenames vs. the number of registered ICQ UINs. I only know one person who has more than one ICQ#, but I know quite a few people have have more than five screenames. Somehow I think this could throw the numbers off.
