  2. Profit lost... on Don't Sever A High-Tech Lifeline for Musicians · · Score: 3, Funny

I'm not quite sure it's so difficult for the folks on /. to see why the RIAA is against MP3s, file sharing, etc... The whole reason record companies exist is to burn CDs and advertise. It's actually quite easy and inexpensive(Meaning not M$, but K$) to setup a nice recording studio and then burn A CD. File sharing takes care of distribution and the relitively cheap cost of advertising on a website takes care of well.. advertisement.
The problem is that the recording companies can see a "free market" in the future, which means their relitive profit will probably come close to zero.
In Ellen Fiess-ese here's the senario:
"So the RIAA guy was like, 'Ah, like, I was doing my homework, and like,,, if these, like people start using mp3s, they will, like, stop buying CDs from us
So I was like Nooo Waaay!, so I made the switch from opressing music artists to suing and getting court orders to ransack small buisinesses trying to establish file-sharing on the internet.
I'm so totally pleased in my desision to broaden my circle oppression, cause, like, I feel so much more totally secure.'"

  3. Weak arguements on Why VHS Was Better Than Betamax · · Score: 3, Insightful

I have to say that the author of this article doesn't understand why people talk about the way things ought to be. As in the case of the standard x86 system. He clames that PCs are better because more people use them therefor there is a greater support and software base... Duh! It doesn't change the fact that there is better technology out there and that the masses don't always make the best descisions. Simply, by his arguements the consumer chooses the better "whole product" and through that choice makes it the better "whole product". So what's the point of the article? I don't think the author could even give you a valid arguement for the existance of the article.

  4. Hurah for a sane voice! on Complications · · Score: 1

I personally am friends with a doctor, and through her friends with other doctors. Hospitals are notoriously under staffed and doctors and nurses notoriously over worked. If anything, we should remember that the time and effort involved in becoming a doctor is a labor of love for humanity in general. These people honestly want to help people, and part of the reason they are so arrogant is that the world is full of stupid people that go around hurting themselves and trying to take advantage of the medical system.
In my opinion everyone should look to doctors with respect for the work they do and the reasons they do it. We should honor their opinions but realize at the same time that they are in fact human and very capable of mistakes. It should be our effort to try to lighten the load that each individual doctor carries by fighting for the rights of medical professionals.
Just remember that your doctor walked and is walking a long road so he/she can help you. Don't muzzle the ox while it treads out the grain.

I believe that this is a case of the powerful attempting to remove the liberty of the common man. Where the simple "God given right" to ownership is being violated, so that the masses, no the companies can gain power. By my understanding the companies pushing for this standard are violating the very law they are claiming to protect. They are claiming to be protection the right of property, while in the same swift movement are taking away your right to own every bit(pun intended) of your computer. I'm sure everyone agrees any group that has enough power will use it to impose their will upon others. I don't see how any individual at these companies can enjoy this whole concept, except that they have a dollar attatched to their d**k. To avoid making this just a rant, I will ask this question: Is it possible for us, the consumer and the common man, to rebel? For everyone's sake I hope so.
