Clearly hasn't been paying much attention to humankinds history.....we're continually doing things that would have seemed impossible/highly stupid in the past.
Would they have any more control over Hurd?
on
HURD For 'Big Iron'?

· Score: 2
My understanding of Hurd is rather limited (basically what I have read in the Kernel Cousins at Linuxcare) so correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Hurd rather focused on doing things "properly" in a somewhat academic/research sense?
If so is it not reasonable to believe that the vendors would find it just as restrictive (if not more so) working with the Hurd?
No, I wouldn't call it good performance, but then again I've never seen such a problem either. Apart from lockups when switching to console in the initial release of the drivers they've behaved flawlessly for me.
Were they helpful when you asked them when their driver will be open source?
Were they helpful when you asked them when they are going to use XF86 4.0's DRI API instead of their own closed, proprietary one?
I've asked them neither of these things, quite frankly I can find little reason to bitch about their drivers when they seem to perform significantly better than the Open Source ones out there.
Well this review is really is going to be a factor in the purchase of my next card when it admits that it has been "weighted" in favour of certain types of applications.
Well, I'd have thought such a scheme would be ideal for people whose primary concern is running "those certain types of applications".
Is it really too much to expect to be given reviews in terms of raw perforamce?
Oh yeah, I find those "3-million bogo-texels per second" numbers on the side of the boxes really useful......
Because the difference is significantly more than a couple of frames per second.
It's also somewhat interesting that the card with (by far) the greatest performance under Linux has closed source drivers.
I'm neither a hard core gamer (I occasionally play Quake III) nor considering upgrading but I still found it an interesting read. If it doesn't interest you then why not just shut up and move on?
Trolltech certainly did an early mockup to show Opera what could be done but I don't know if they are still doing the work. I'd imagine that using the gui toolkit is probably ridiculously easy compared to the browser code itself. At least one of the people working on Opera (and working on the gui bits too), Espen Sand has an Opera email address.
I'm under the impression that they more or less started from scratch with the Opera 4 series and that the Windows and Linux versions of 4 have been developed at the same time, based on the same cross platform core.
The fact that not only are both Trolltech and Opera from Norway, but they also have offices in the same building may have something to do with it:) I'd like to see a GTK version too. Roll on the final release (and version 4.1)...
Paul
Have you tried plying the lokigames newsgroups for help? I used to get lockups but it was fixed by upgrading to the nVidia driver for Xfree4 and now everything is sweet.
I'm just a casual Q3A player, I just play occasionally for fun. The server I play on doesn't feature any mods, why should I have to wait for the Mod authors to be happy before I get my update from ID? Surely people who use mods are capable of simply not installing the update until the mods are ready, or are ID sending round goons with BFGs to force everyone to upgrade?
There are several points.
With Microsoft you pay for a 'premium update service' whether you want to use one or not.
With RedHat you only pay for it IF you want it. If you don't you still have access to updates through normal channels.
As proprietary vendor Microsoft's Windows Update is as much a tool for Microsoft to pimp out their latest wares as it is a tool for the user (I for one regret also downloading Media Player 7 when I last went to get a Java VM fix from Windows Update).

And this certainly isn't it.
hardly smacks of seriousness.
who seems to have a liking for beans.
and presumably abulafia is a troll.
But for the rest of us, here's the other winners and their profile pages:
Masanobu Katoh - Asia/Australia/Pacific
Nii Quaynor - Africa
Andy Mueller-Maguhn - Europe
Ivan Moura Campos - Latin America and Caribbean

Whenever I have needed help I have found the nvidia people that sit in that channel very helpful.
He he he, Opera foiled by netscapes shitty handling of missing linked style sheets.
How ironic is that?
Did this press release ever make Slashdot?
Opera Software, PalmPalm and Trolltech form Strategic Alliance for Asian Embedded Linux Market.
The press release is about a week old.
1.1 megs for the dynamically linked version isn't exactly what I'd call bloated......these days that almost looks absurdly efficient!

FAQ as it list a rather extensive list of platforms they are "actively persuing". The list includes Alpha, Sparc and Power PC to name just a few.

Slashdot style!

Come on people, show some intelligence. Windows update isn't free, it's just paid for in a different way.
It's just none of them are as good as 'fuck'.
