The FreeBSD Handbook (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/diskless.html) has a quick guide to diskless operation. You can run netboot from an eprom or a diskette to bootstrap the kernel from the net too. We run Debian GNU/Linux and RedHat too, no OS war intended.
