  1. Hey.. about that Star Wars movie stuff on Quickies from OLS - les Quickies d'OLS · · Score: 1

Anyone notice they also casted the roles of Luke's Aunt and Uncle?

Maybe we can figure out more about Queen Amidala's family in this next movie, or maybe the term "Aunt" and "Uncle" mean they are foster relatives.

It would make sense since the name is Beru and Owen Lars, but they could be legitimate relatives if Beru and Amidala are sisters..

Sorry to spoil the plot, but it is neat what kind of deductions one can make by just looking at the situation.

Can anyone else draw any interesting conclusions from that page?

(Btw, check out the girl that is going to play Beru, maybe now we can get all the leet 'First Post!' dudes to sing a different song!)

Hey.. just a quick notice, but how do you report spelling errors in news posts to the appropriate people? Last I heard, "essentailyl" was only used in European butter.. :) Sorry, but I'm new here, don't know the in's and out's of reporting spelling issues to the admins..

  3. WIPO is not a .org, they are a .gov on Corinthians.com Taken Away, Given To Soccer Team · · Score: 1

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is an intergovernmental organization with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. (Taken from: www.wipo.org/eng/dgtext.htm)

I have never looked up the info till today and I was shocked to find that the WIPO is a government authority in these matters. They should be located at wipo.gov and not wipo.org. But who do we report *this* to?

I'm not an educated person on registration matters, but it would make sense to me that the Corinthians soccer team should have went to the appropriate business contacts, the registration provider, DNS provider, and such, and if they said they wouldn't change the information, they would then stop there and not goto a governmental organization.

What is it with people always skipping the business and going to the government first? Don't they know they are only encouraging government to get involved in situations like this? Do they even care? Apparently not.

Despite that, the recent PETA problem and this one are really starting to shake things up. The government is coming people, and it will totally revolutionize the way the Internet works. It is inevitable and there is no way to stop it, so enjoy while you can.

I myself run a website, sort of a Slashdot parody, and I am grateful that I haven't been asked to relinquish it. My purpose isn't to slam Slashdot, but just be funny in a dissimilar way than Slashdot. Because they haven't tried to do anything to my holding of the domain, I respect them.

Do you think the guy involved will respect the Corinthian's soccer team from now on?

  4. Yeah.. But.. on Maxtor's 80GB Drive · · Score: 1

Well, okay, you have me there, but I've never owned a computer when I filled up all 4 IDE connections. I have yet to try and own a DVD and CDRW and Zip all at once either. But for personal users needs, I think only 2 IDE HDs are needed. Buy a 40 to 60 gig now, another 40 or 60 in 6 months (or whenever that one is full), and by the time that one is full, you can just buy the HD that is currently closest to the price of the original 40 or 60 gig that you purchased, and copy the files over. It seems like a lot of money, but for the difference in price of 60 to 75, or 60 to 80, it is really worth it. There is little chance that you could fill an 80 or 75 gig HD much faster than you could fill a 60 gig. I mean, we are talking about replacing tape drive storage systems with "purchasing a second hard drive".

  5. Of no concern on Maxtor's 80GB Drive · · Score: 1

Seriously though, you can already buy 75 gig HD from any of the companies listed on Pricewatch (www.pricewatch.com) So why bother getting that extra 5 gig?

I suppose that is maybe 5 more DVD rips.. Hmm.. mabye it *is* worth it.

Check the prices on Pricewatch for a 75 gig HD, ($530+) and then look at the prices on just 15 gig less. ($245+)

That is over 200 dollars for a difference of 15 gig!

So how much more is the 80 gig going to be than the 75 gig? I shudder to think of it...

  6. That reminds me.. on Coca-Cola Loses Fizz To Microsoft · · Score: 1

I recall a situation back during the Lewinsky scandal where a guy when around New York asking people if they thought the President should be impeached by Congress for lying to the country. The majority of course said "No", as you can all recall.

However, this guy didn't stop there, he went on to ask a few other questions, some a little bit more interesting:

"Do you think Linda Tripp should have recorded her friend's conversations over the phone?"

    "No", was the majority opinion.

"Do you think that the Republican leaders should back off of Clinton?"

    "Yes", was the majority opinon.

"Who is the current United States Vice-President?"

    50% didn't know the answer.

I wonder if anyone has done a poll of this type in recent days, I'd like to see how many people know who the current Speaker of the House is, or better yet, the Senate Minority Leader.

    Do you know?

  7. I don't know.. on Coca-Cola Loses Fizz To Microsoft · · Score: 2

While I won't object to the first three, I think Kodak is less often used in place of picture than the other three are always used.

And as for Microsoft, in my three years of working technical support for a college I've only heard that term used once in the context you state. And it was used like this:

"I see you guys updated my Microsoft to eight." (Referring to updating her Power Mac from 7.5.5 to OS 8.)

The woman was not a technical person, and we (the other support person and I) just threw it off as something that didn't need to be corrected.

Now that I think about it though, it probably would have been a good idea to mention that it was Apple's "OS 8" and had nothing to do with Microsoft.

The only problem is, educating people on simple matters like this is:

    1. Useless - They'll most likely forget it in a week anyway
    2. Time consuming - Especially in an English Department where they always ask follow-up questions
    3. Unproductive - When it comes down to it, they think I'm just spouting off my geek talk and trying to appear uber-human
    4. Dangerous - If everyone in the world knew Microsoft was a company and not an "OS", there'd be more geeks in the world. My job requires that I be more of a geek than the rest of faculty where I work. If I'm not, there is no need for me.

Still, I could have probably mentioned something.

  8. Brand Recognition != Memorable Commercials? on Coca-Cola Loses Fizz To Microsoft · · Score: 2

Interbrand's survey looks at the future earnings potential of the companies concerned and tries to assess how much of that can be attributed to the brands they own.

The whole survey wasn't based on what brands people recognize, contrary to popular belief. It only has to do with earning potential, thus meaning that "Open Source" software, such as Linux, will not be recognized by the survey. It is too bad really, because I'd like to see more info than just the top two or three companies.

Also, I've always wondered why Coca-Cola has had such high brand name recognition? I mean, think of all the ads you can remember that Coke has made. Now count anything done by Pepsi. I don't know about you, but Pepsi has that annoying little girl, the "Pepsi Challenge", and if you count Mountain Dew, a whole line of memorable commercials.

Maybe brand recognition doesn't have to do with soley commercials, but I'd think that it would be a large part of it.
