  1. Here's a different test... on Debunking The Need For 200FPS · · Score: 1

While staring at your monitor, stick your tongue out so that it touches both upper and lower lip. Then blow so that you end up making "farting" noises as a result of the lips slapping against your tongue. You'll notice your monitor's refresh rate for sure.

  2. business tactics these days... on Sony VP On Stopping Napster · · Score: 1

It seems that as today's technology grows ever so much faster, big corps are using scare tactics ever more frequently so as to prevent these new technologies from 'stealing their profits'. You would think that things couldn't possibly get any more ludicrous, but Sony takes it one step further. I think the trend is that because these big corps have so much money, they feel that throwing it around here and there and using lawsuits as a leverage will be the answer to making sure not a penny of their millions of dollars in revenue gets drained by some college kids' utility/program. You have to wonder if they're not losing more money from these lawsuits than from actual piracy. Not to mention the time required to keep up w/ the lawsuits.

But what they don't seem to realize is that we as the consumers ultimately decide what goes and what doesn't. For Sony to say 'we will firewall it at your pc' and all that other great BS is not too far from saying 'please boycott us'. Quite a few slashdotters mentioned that consumers can easily choose to not support such companies. If every one of these big guys decides to use such practices then perhaps we our out of luck (but then that's also when there needs to be laws on such business behavior). However in the long run people will still find other ways of going around these "methods of prevention".

Even if these companies really do mean well (leaves room to laugh out loud), they have now already painted a bad image of themselves. So most people today will just say 'oh, look, yet another greedy bastard of a company is trying to make headlines again...' I wonder when they will actually realize that by publicly stating their views they are actually doing themselves a disfavor. Why not just support whatever causes they want to support (e.g. Sony supporting RIAA) and leave it at that? Why risk tarnishing your company image? I used to think that all my electronics had to have the Sony tag on 'em or they were'nt worth buying... but now I am not so sure.

  3. It just doesn't get any dumber on AOL Sued for Creating Gnutella · · Score: 1

While they're at it, why not sue:

    • makers of cd writers: for providing a means of copying music cds
    • xerox machines: man, all those authors not being paid for their work! i'm sure steven king is out there starving becuase of these copying machines
    • makers of cassette recorders, vcr's, hard drives (if we didn't have all those gigs, we wouldn't even consider downloaiding 4 meg mp3's)

What is this world coming to? It seems like peole are just trying to pass the blame... and for some reason I feel the inventors of the internet will soon be sued for providing a means of quickly exchanging all these illegal files.

  4. It's not dead, we're just waiting... on Suck Says Mozilla Is Dead · · Score: 1

I don't know about you guys, but I'm still using Netscape 4.x, but not because I hate Mozilla. In fact, I've downloaded quite a few milestones (that hugeass download weighed several milestones; how fitting a name). But for now, I still think Mozilla is too "developmental" -- stability is there, but in the eyes of the consumer, it's "not done". I'll definitely switch over "when it's done".

So why does it seem like Mozilla is dead? It's probably becuase there are a good number of people like me who don't want to download megs and megs of bytes to get a browser (reminds you of those hefty IE updates... bleh). We're all just waiting for the final releases... until then, here are some reasons why downloading Mozilla right now isn't worth some of our time:

    • I don't need a damn "web editor" or html creator -- emacs is big enough and heavy duty enough. Plus there are tons of other html editors that simply blow the one from Mozilla away (esp. for say Windows platforms). Just give me a browser and MAYBE and email client. If anything, why not distribute them separtely (or have an option ot not install various components).
    • That's great that Mozilla can handle regular html and css, but what about the latest and greatest multimedia stuff? I know shockwave exists for Linux users, but how about some more plugins or whatever it is that is used
    • They must have been thinking of "ugly" when they designed the look. At least we can change the look eventually via skins. However, the fact that the ENTIRE app's UI is rendered by Mozilla makes me frown. Why not use widgets or something common so that all that rendering doesn't have to be done every single time.
  5. Apple makes yet another mistake... on Apple Punishes ATI For Leaking The Cube? · · Score: 1

With all the new ideas coming from Apple, it's a shame that they end up wrecking all they've built. I am very impressed w/ the look and feel of Mac OS X, and have actually considered buying an Apple. I was also impressed w/ their cube. However, the moment I read these headlines, I thought: "What the hell are they smoking? Is there some 'mary jane' growing in the apple orchard?".

When ATI release the news about the cube and their Radeon, I am almost sure everyone was like 'wow, gotta get one of those machines'. Yet instead of thanking ATI for the free PR, Apple gets pissed and reduces to the Rage? Jee, I wonder who is really going to suffer -- I doubt many will consider their new cubes now, since the new machine will be equipped w/ dated graphics cards. If anything, they won't buy the cube, yet will still buy the Radeon to put in their other machines. Apple has always had the "they're good for multimedia, esp. graphics" title, so this move is like selling a brand new BMW, with a Pinto engine inside.

It's a shame that Apple will be ruining themselves... and without the help of MS and its Windows.

  6. I was hoping for more honesty... on Judge Conflicted Interest in MPAA/2600 DeCSS Case? · · Score: 1

I don't think the fact that the subject of this case being DeCSS is all that relevant. It bothers me that this judge, who has had previous contact with either parties (and the contact seems to portray him possibly favoring one party over the other), did not excuse himself from the bench for possible conflicts of interest. I don't care if it was a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, or if he joined the dark side and "forgot"; a judge cannot be excused because he "forgets".

The fact that these new findings have come into light should be more than enough reason for this judge to remove himself. Hopefully these new findings will only win more favor towards the Linux DVD effort.
