A problem with this plan arises if you employ anyone, as large corps tend to - unless you don't fell any obligation to the people you emply

What about a family business? "Some day son all of this won't be yours"

Finally corporations are not allowed to 'settle for a tidy profit' They have to maximise shareholder value, although how they do that is negotiable.

Isn't that a bit like saying. It isn't your car - the money used to buy it was given to you by your employer.

I rather like to idea of getting a bunch of people together - going round to military HQ and saying - "can we have our bomb back?"

though linking this directly to mp3 piracy and not to rougher economic times isn't proven

I have heard that things like CDs aren't affected (much) by the rougher economic times. Infact that sales go up - people cut back on expensive things but still want to treat themselves. Sales of beer are another example I think.

Maybe the flatlining of sales have more to do with content (there's nothing new I want to buy) than piracy.

Actually they are doing because the TAX is too high.

They don't want the gov to fix the price. They just want the gov to take less, i.e. stop fixing the price (in the UK the gov claim that the price is high in a effort to make(force) people to be greener)

Well the real problem for this is PKI (public key infrastructure).

If I want to call you on the phone I get your number (from a directory) if it's wrong I try again or something.

If I want to use public key cryptography I need to get your public key. I need a yellow pages for public keys. Not only that but I need to know that you are you and not someone with the same name. With telephones we use your address. I do not think this will work on the supposedly anonymous web. (Can I get the PK of Fred the Freedom fighter, 22 High Street Beijing - I need to send him some anti gov docs)

Finally how do I know your public key has not been modified to allow someone to read my messages?

My (UK) gov certainly taxes cigarette makers a lot on the basis that it causes (contributes to) a lot of people being ill. Also petrol taxes are apparently so high in an effort to convince people to stop polluting the environment. In both cases (I think) the gov claims that the money generated from the extreme tax (as opposed to std. tax level) goes to hospitals/green things.
