  2. Not everyone... on Why Linux Lovers Jilt Java · · Score: 5

As a longtime linux user and C/C++/Java programmer, I beg to differ. Anytime we start making generalizations about such a broad group of people (such as all linux folks), we begin to display a lack of understanding of the group itself. All of us are not using linux because of the philisophical underpinnings of open source, to some of us, it is not about religion, it's about practicality. Am I an embedded programmer? No. I'm a server-side guy myself, and nothing works better than Apache+Tomcat (as well as playing around with some sweet non-open source servlet engines as well). JSP's and servlets rock, and run great on my 2.2.x boxen. Doesn't run with the 2.4 series? Then I won't use it. Don't like java? Then don't use it. But don't tell me that it's crap, because it's not. Again, just a lowly geek's opinion, but just had to share...

I, too was brutalized by the Telocity/Rhythms/Ameritech triangle of death. I live in the Milwaukee area, went through many of the ordeals that delevant went through, including: - having to perform all of the inside wiring myself due to 'extensive inside wiring issues', translated to: The installer didn't have a long enough drill bit - downtime from 10sep2000 to 21sep2000, having a rhythms rep tell me that i was 'admistrtively turned off' at the CO (BS!). back online for 6 hours. - back down from 22sep2000 to 26sep2000 until I finally reached a rep at Telocity who seemed to give a damn, and started the wheels in motion again. - up for some odd reason again on 27sep2000. Now, I am at the mercy of Ameritech for line quality testing. Apparently, there is unusual voltage on the line, so now I'm in an 'on again, off again' situation. There are other alternatives in the Milwaukee area, for somewhat reasonable ($75/mo vs my $49/mo) for 768k/4xxk connection. Fortunately for me, no contract, so we'll see what happens. When it's running, it's running great. Have ftp/web services, blazing fast burst speeds, but this whole fiasco left a sour taste in my mounth.

Isn't it /etc/rc.conf?? Also (bear with me, somewhat new to FreeBSD, but not *nix), couldn't you just download and compile the ssh stuff, and do this all manually if you had to??
