No, you are dumb for responding with completely irrelevant argument. Original poster claimed that no firewall will be able to stop encrypted protocols. I responded that firewall has nothing to do with the protocols but generally works by blocking ports. That's it - yet you insists on bringing this nonsens here.
Of course there is nothing magical about ports but if people agreed to use 6667 for publicly available irc server and if your firewall is blocking that port then you are not going to chat, period. I matters not if actuall chat data is encrypted or not.
Maybe I am missing something but isn't firewall based on blocking ports ? In that case it makes no difference if protocol is encrypted or not. If 6667 is closed , that's it - no more IRC.
"It was a bug-ridden, crash-prone dog for years and years. "
So was Unix for at least 10 years.
NT is not perfect but it represents something new, perhaps flawed as of now, but promising. Recall beginning of Unix - how often it was dismissed by mainframe people as a toy that won't fly anywhere ?
"Text is MUCH easier than gui, if you know what you're doing"
But that's exactly the problem ! People new to computers don't know what they are doing, or rather they know what they want to do but have a problem expressing it into precise action that computer will understand. GUI is there to help with that transition.
Having "usage: find [-H |-L...etc" is not very helpfull is it ?
Xwininfo reports size of internal application window which _does_ not account for decorations. Show the XLib call which allows me to minimize my application ( and no , Window Manager doesn't count here , it must be call available to xlib app ) Have you ever programmed anything using Xlib ??
There is price you pay for having standard. You have to follow it or otherwise stuff will stop working. Same on Windows. Why would I want the apps to change scrollbars ? If there is a need for it ( like in games, MP3 players etc..) it is easy enough to do it. WinAPI provides tons of ways to manage that. On the other hand there is no way to find out exact size of the topmost window on X. There is no way to minimize window etc... If one wants to implement MID app there is no way to make sure that children windows have the same decorations as main window.
Cut and paste is simply broken. There are standards for it but so f*** what ? It doesn't work, plain and simple.
X networking abilities, while powerfull, are of no use for me and most people I know. Completely irrelevant. The one thing I care about, fast and consistent GUI is sadly lacking on just about every X implementation I worked with. ( btw I am using state of the art X server from XIG which, while way faster than XFree, still lags behind Windows on the same box)
You will not make anything better unless there is company like Nike to give these people jobs. You might boycott Nike but if they pull out , that's it , you just made bunch of poor people even poorer. Without business community there will never be change for better , ever.
I don't like Gnome , mostly due to usability problems but this guy is right on the money. Lack of unified printing support, complete lack of code reuse ( brilliant example with Netscape, StarOffice etc...) Hell , even lack of common font support ( some of the apps see TTF fonts others don't ) it all leads to the terrible desktop experience most new users complain about when faced with Linux.
"..and many windows daemons have to have an invisible window.."
It is true for Windows 95 but not for NT which has nice service model. As far as Windows GUI shell is concerned, there are tons of replacements available so obviously it is not that hard to "hack" into it. Windows got it right, at least on the desktop.
It is definately true in server market but I was under impression that desktop machines are generally better of with faster single processor. (where we stand now, most of desktop type software isn't even threaded...)
Faster than C ? You realize that perl was written in C. It might be faster in text processing if compared to some naive C code but that's pointless. In efect you are comparing algoritms which of course has nothing to do with C vs Perl.
Very true. I tend to belive that there is no such thing as legal system here anymore. It is so "flexible", depending on current wave of political correctness rulings can change from one extreme to another very quickly. Another part of the puzzle here is liberal press. It almost sounds like cliche but consider this - federal data shows that white people are much more likely to be victims of so called hate crime yet we never see that in the news. But what can you expect from the press when about 90% of them are registered democratic voters.
Funny you mention that. Following your advice Kaczynski managed to stay completely anonymous for 2 decades even with half of federal agents constantly looking for him. I guess it works.
No. Being member of discount club is up to you and has nothing to do with "evil corporations" trying to hijack your personal information. As far as I know, one can still simply walk into grocery store, pay with cash and walk away, completely anonymous.
Actually, being confrontational is not a bad thing. The problem here is that we are trying toavoid that at all cost which is complete nonsens and generally leads to unwritten censorship ( this Rocker (?) guy in NY being case in point)
One thing I have heard about Bonobo is that, well, it is not known for being lightweight ( to put it nicely.) Combining that with existing bloat of SO what can we expect from this kind of "marriage" ?
Netscape on Linux still hasn't completely solved problem with asynchronous DNS lookups.

Everybody does it. At least they try. It is the other side that we expect to resist and maintain their integrity.

Having concept of Window Managers is not bad. The problem here is that Xlib interface for interacting between apps and WM is sorely lacking.

Yeah. That just proves my point. Perl text processing libraries use optimized algoritm (written in C of course)

Yes, it is all true except try to go to any office in US and you will see what I mean ...
Could you elaborate a bit on Disney and Anastasia story ?

Unfortunately, to be truly usefull, any office suite needs to read MS formats well, otherwise it is nothing but excersize in frustration.
