I think we need some real wars on the net, to thrash out all the issues people have been avoiding for so long. Every country has a different idea of what is acceptable, but they've all been pussy-footing around the problem. This has to end soon - we're in for some pretty interesting times.
As an interesting aside, any Europeans out there try this: add the line "By the way, I don't know if this is true, but the popular view outside of the US is that the NRA are right-wing loonies. Is this true?" to one of your comments. The ensuing debate by Americans is always quite interesting. But I'm rambling.
One problem that people keep bringing up is the fact that Linux was never designed with games in mind.
The games market is enormous. Perhaps the time is right for an Open Source Games OS to be developed? One that doesn't have all the baggage required for server/desktop computing?

His ideas are a bit daft, but he does put forward one or two good points. The problem with this review is that it is clear from the start that the reviewer hates the book and quite possibly the author. I would have liked a little objectivity...
p.s. I don't know about in the US, but the view from the outside is that the NRA are a bunch of right-wing loonies. Is this true?

Wow, did I step into a time warp? Because this comment had to be written 10 years ago (at least). resurgance of the Conservatives in Britain Ha ha ha ha ha
Are you going to dismiss studies by any institution large enough to produce an independent study of all the major industrialised countries? Which studies would you trust? Only those conducted by Bill Gates?
Yeah, he attached it with ribbon cable to a bank card and used it to get cash from an ATM. It automatically tried every sequence of pins as I remember. Apparently bank security systems are a bit lax.
What planet is Katz living on? As far as I can see, the net is nowhere near being saved from corporate and political domination. In fact it's sliding further towards that fate. And having people like Jon Katz deny the fact is not helping one bit.
Are new political values really being formed online, or is it simply a case of people being able to promote their own values and opinions more easily on the net?
It could be that we're now more aware of previously underground politics than we were.
We need reform, Dertouzos says, a new plan for "human-centric computing" that will serve, not frustrate people, and work as well for the non-tech world as for the tech universe.
We need human-centric telephones, that will serve, not frustrate people, yada yada yada
One way to prevent the police killing people is to prevent them from carrying guns. Apart from armed response units and a few other exceptions, ordinary police officers do not carry guns here in the UK. I hope it stays that way.
The UK and the US do not recognise Sealand. Since the 1987 expansion of Britain's territorial limits, Sealand has been within the our sea boundaries. Check out this article
According to a US State Department official, who declined to be identified, "There are no independent principalities in the North Sea. As far as we are concerned, they are just Crown dependencies of Britain."
If you're going to complain about post numbers, make sure you're not going to be post #1046. Nobody listening? Well obviously YOU are... Hiding behind AC too, tut tut.
By allowing geeks to flourish, we're denying the forces of nature which should by rights have eliminated them from this planet. I say let's stop this madness! What we need is a geek cull. Kill the majority of geeks and then keep the remaining few as slaves. Yes!
I assume that all the people who actually noticed the sarcasm in this post decided not to comment, since most of the posters here seem to have got entirely the wrong end of the stick!

UN studies don't count here either.

Get a grip and go to some real parties, then realise that having a harness to carry your PC around is not really a high priority issue.
Then wonder why it made the headlines in Slashdot.

That'll teach me to karma whore - just wanted to see what life was like on the "other side."
The problem doesn't seem to be the id string that the browser uses, but that PGP-encrypted data that gets sent back to Earthlink upon installation.
Earthlink could do themselves a big favour by revealing exactly what is being sent.
Offtopic? The topic is numbers right? Oh well. Now this post will get modded down, oops.

It doesn't make sense, does it?
Great news! Plus London would flood, forcing Government to move to Birmingham! All of my dreams come true!

At least we'd be safe from Kevin Warwick and his Cyborg Army.
Or maybe that's what he wants us to think, eh?

Hold on - you do get to see Marge naked!
The Simpsons Nudity List
I'm sure I've seen it too - I'm convinced. Can we get a second opinion?
