  1. Call me stupid on Are You Reporting Your Internet Purchases? · · Score: 1

Yes, I reported my out-of-state internet purchases (I live in California). Call me stupid, but I believe that the taxes that I pay help build a better society. Call me stupid, but I believe the roads I use, that schools my (future) children will use, the protection and comfort that I enjoy right now COSTS MONEY, and everybody has to pay its share.
I really don't understand people who are evading the IRS and trying to find every possible (bad) reason to not pay taxes: to me, that's just greed... It's always the same: everybody wants the best public service, but nobody wants to pay for it...

    > 1) We would have surrendered before the second plane hit the WTC.

It's so much better with GWB, who is preparing the future plane bombers for the next 20 years. People are not born hateful, they grow hateful because of their enviromnent: maybe there is a reason behind 9/11, and maybe this reason is not enterily that "these people are Evil".

    > 2) Only criminals would have guns

Considering that less than 1% of death caused by handguns is in self defense, that's pretty much already the case...

    > 3) Even more money would be taken from my pocket to support inner city kids who don't understand "Gang Banging" isn't a productive life style.

When the inner city kids will make the next revolution, maybe you'll regret not helping them getting a better education instead of parking them in a ghetto.

    > 4) We would be paying $5.00 for a gallon of gas, to put in a sub-standard 1000 pound car that would be destroyed when it collided with a june bug.

This is the case on the rest of the planet (paying $5 bucks a gallon). Only in america and in some other oil-producing countries will you still get your gas so cheap. But then again, when your gallon cost $50 because there's no supply left, you will probably be the first to insult those "damn greens and liberals" that didn't plan for the shortage of gas 50 years ago...

It's so stupid, it's not even funny.

  3. Re:Security? on A Digital Certificate For Every Canadian · · Score: 1

It's rather common to store digital certificates on smartcard-like devices, in order to avoid the situation you describe (what proves you are who you pretend to be). And when the certificate is password-protected with a pin number, it makes it really hard to impersonnate somebody (well much harder than forging a signature anyway :), unless you steal their card and manage to get their pin.

I think the aim is not so much proving who you are, as much as proving the document was signed by you: a hand-written signature offers a rather ridiculous level of security.

  4. Re:DRM -- You nailed it on Cheap SSL Certificates for Small Websites? · · Score: 1

Actually it would be a good thing if certificate authorities were a public service managed by the government: it would solve a lot of trust issues, root certificate distribution and suppress Verisign's monopoly. That is, if you couldn't get denied of getting one for any religious or political reason...
(Libertarians will mod me down for involving the government here... oh well! :))

Mac uses OpenFirmware (http://www.openfirmware.org/) which is much more standard than all the crappy PC bios... And Sun's OpenBoot PROM is also derived from OpenFirmware BTW...

Are you french by any chance? You are trying to bend french minds to your will... well I mean, if you were a judge! :-) Argh, that means that I'm french too: I'm trying to bend your will to mine! We are all contaminated: we are all trying to bend each others mind to our mind!
Seriously: what if some country decides that child pornography is legal? After all, it is a form of expression...
I just hope one thing: that the USA won't have another Hoover-like FBI director, because with all the evidence collected by echelon... Sorry, I'm getting subversive! :-)
