The important thing is to continue to learn and find new things that provide motivation and interest. Open source is invaluable in providing choices, a community, and a great knowledge base from which to learn. Without it, I probably would have given up programming after 10 years. With passion, one can do almost anything.

  4. IP Addresses in the clear on Physical-layer Ethernet Encryption · · Score: 1

The IP addresses need to be outside the encrypted payload for routing. This encryption won't be done at each gateway. So a snoop would know where your packets are going.

I think (but don't know since I am too lazy to read the IPSec spec) that the layer 4 (UDP / TCP) packets will be encoded so a snoop will not know if you are going to TCP port 80.

I worked with Larry for awhile at a small company a few years ago and yes, he is a great guy. Many of the highly talented developers that I have known can be a little difficult (or very difficult) to work with. But not Larry. Nice guy, friendy, modest, and easy to work with.

  6. Linux is a big help to FreeBSD on Is FreeBSD really 'The Other Linux' · · Score: 2

As a person who uses both Mandrake 6.0 and FreeBSD 3.1, they are both kick ass. Without them, I would be running 98 on my laptop and NT on my desktop and I would be a sad person.

That said, Linux is a huge boon to BSD because:

    1. Linux makes people aware of BSD. I first heard about BSD here at slashdot. Linux enlarges the PC Unix user base.

    2. BSD benifits from development of all of the Linux oriented applictions. I have not had any trouble running any Linux apps on BSD.

    3. Linux inspires innovation and provides competition, forcing BSD to provide what its users want.

In the end, if you like to tinker and contribute, Linux is a good choice. If you just want to to work and not worry about it, Free BSD might be a better choice.

Or, do like I do, use them both.

I agree - this book is well worth buying. I ordered it from Walnut Creek CDROM combined with the 4 CDROM package and read it from cover to cover. It is similar to the O'Rielly Running Linux boox, but it has additional depth and content. Also, since the author doesn't have to deal with multiple distributions for BSD, he can be a bit more specific.

  13. Re:Gigabit ethernet vs. ATM on First Gigabit Ethernet Chip Demo · · Score: 1

I would add that I think the IP protocol fits much better over simple ethernet than it does with the complex, fixed cell, connection oriented ATM protocol. The new gigabit ethernet layer 3 switches that route in hardware and foward packets at wire speed should limit the use of ATM to very specific applications.

  14. Why use 1000T? on First Gigabit Ethernet Chip Demo · · Score: 1

After reading this, I wonder why one would choose to use the new gig over copper technology rather than the existing gigabit ethernet over fiber. Since the 1000 base T uses all four wire pairs at a high frequency, there is significant power consumption and heat. Am I way wrong in thinking that the only benifit of 1000T over fiber is that existing cat-5 wires can be used? Or are we expecting a big price difference for NIC cards and switches?
