  1. Anti-Microsoft Rant on Hacker's Diet · · Score: 1

It's amusing to find an Anti-Microsoft Rant in the middle of a book on weightloss. Can you find similar monologues in other books, hopefully in the Introduction rather than the middle of a chapter. Is this kind of thing even appropraite in a book like this, no matter how true?

  2. Re:Some thoughts on the movie(s) (SPOILERS!) on The Matrix to have two sequels · · Score: 1

Obviously they have to make at least one of them a sequal since they've already signed Ted (Keanu Reeves). But since TPM is a prequel they'll probably make one of each just to be cool.

If the Wachowski brothers have spent any time on the Internet at all the know that they better come up with something better than the batteries next time around. I wouldn't be surprised if we see some of the material on the official site seeping in.

Finally, do you think they'll base the original Chosen One (who is the obvious focus of a prequel) on the same Christian mythology or maybe pick another culture? Will they work to make this series the geek classic that Star Wars no longer is?

On a final note: I'm a little annoyed to see Sydney being chosen for all the reasons Vancouver is supposed to be. :)

  3. Re: AMDs for Power Gamers on Carmack on the K7 · · Score: 1

Perhaps the average /. reader should be less than overjoyed with the combination of benchmarks and price estimates for the K7. After all, Linux runs everything including games so much faster that buying the latest MHZ isn't important. Therefore, we are loosing another low-cost option to the Win9x hardcore bloatwear users. My future systems will probably be Celeron based, for what other choice is there for a budget box?

Do you think it's significant that only 3 out of the 51 comments under this story (at the time this is posted) have real, ungarbled email addresses?

  5. Futurerama Sucked! on Katz v Taco: Futurama · · Score: 1

Didn't anyone else think that was just as bad as the Simpsons is these days? They made a major mistake by obviously gearing the show to the average moron sitting in front of the TV rather than the people Katz thinks it actually was geared to. Most of the sci-fi references were shallow and trite. I'm going to keep watching in the hopes that it gets better, but I'm afraid I'm the only one who hasn't been brainwashed by the hype.

  6. Patent Law and the Copyleft License on Feature:Why ideas should not be property · · Score: 1

The original purpose of copywrite law is to give the private sector a reason to do research (never mind 'pure' research). It is assumed that being the first on the scene does not give them enough market advantage to make it worthwhile to invent. Although people can and constantly do develop intellectual (as opposed to material) products without any hope of financial gain, it was assumed that giving them a chance to make a living off their inventions would result in faster progress.

Luckily there are alternatives, such as the new Copyleft License which causes intellectual property rights to dissipate after two years (by which time any software'll probably be obsolete). Even when looking at the Open Source movement one must keep in mind that there are non-financial rewards -- after all, who wouldn't want to be a 'benevolent dictator' at least some of the time? The sad truth is that humans don't even like thinking for free, and in order to keep them thinking we have to keep paying them.
