I agree with you. I looked into micro controllers six or seven years ago and thought the same thing. Now with some much going on with Arduino and some many cool projects out there, I'm finally going to jump in and start doing instead of just reading.
I'm re-reading Cryptonomicon right now also, it's been 5 years since the first read. I'm looking forward to Anathem and hope its good enough to require a re-read in the future.
My vote is for partimage as well. I use it regularly on Win98,Win2K, and XP machines. I also use it to backup my server images. I use it in conjunction with Timos Rescue CD on the Windows machines. I moved from Ghost Enterprise to this for all my needs, and you can't beat the price.
As a long time user of Linux, new to the world of OS X. I've found the best finder , is just to drop in to a terminal or iTerm and do things the easy way. Command line is faster, to me anyway.
