  1. Re:Internal Pyramid Scheme? on Inside SAIC · · Score: 1

One of my co-workers desribed the whole stock ownership thing as a "legal ponzi scheme, but it should be okay for awhile" (when asked whether it was worth it to buy stock)

This was my experience too. I was a little more secure in that I worked for a company owned by SAIC, but as soon as we lost our biggest customer, SAIC canned the whole company and sold the assets.

  3. 180 hardcore spammers? on AOL Blocks 2 Billion Spam/Day · · Score: 1

just looking at AOL's numbers, the claim that there are only 180 'problem spammers' starts to lose credibility

2 Billion emails divided by 180 spammers equals approx 11 millions emails per spammer per day *just to AOL alone*.

Unless the 'problem spammers' that were alluded to a few days ago are the ones that make it through the blockers, the 2 billion spams are from several thousand 'non problem spammers' (Is there such a thing?)

  4. Story from a MercuryInteractive Sales rep on Other Sources of the "Slashdot Effect"? · · Score: 1
Mercury Interactive sells a web server load testing tool called (wait for the pun...) "Load Runner". When we were in being wined and dined by the sales force before buying it, we were told this story (don't know if true or now, but it sound neat...)

The IT team at CBS had worked for months to get their website up for "Survivor", with behind the scenes footage, bios of all the contestants, etc all set to debut with the first episode. a couple of days before the premier, some bright sales guy at MI called a VP at CBS and asked if they needed any testing services. He was assured that everything was ready for the big event. Wednesday came, the show was a hit, and the website melted about 30 seconds after the show was over. Thursday morning, the sales rep again called the VP, and was rudely told that everything was under control and to please stop calling. CBS then spent approx $300,000 that week beefing up their webservers in preperation for next weeks show.

Next wednesday night, the servers lasted about 5 minutes before meltdown.

Thursday morning, the VP of CBS called the sales rep at MI and asked "How much?".

Does this mean I'm not allowed to talk about SPAM, or send an unsubscribe request to a spammer? What about debian's 'Popularity' package, that's a survey isn't it.
I can't even forward complaints about the latest Nigerin 419 scam to the proper authority.
