the people living in a more free (as in fruit and speech) society have the ability to vote and influence their lives in other ways using the savings theyve kept from not having to pay for food, etc (or in a more realistic example of what can happen in our current environment where lower costs of production from that same free flow of ideas generate greater savings) can decide to invest the revenues generated through taxes in infrastracture and services that will lead to greater productivity and to cut taxes more and more as general prosperity increases... you may not have to work as we now know it but it might change our very concept of work and what we work for instead of leading to a society where no one does anything. just because you arent forced to do anything doesnt mean you wont want to... we have a knack for finding new challenges in our lives. it seems to me that you are afraid of a more intelligent society just as much as you may advocate it. hey, cynicism is fashionable. cant blame you.
music and creativity in general dont only follow a pattern of copying everything else that is and has ever been, it also has a lot to do with true talent where what you make is NOT the same as everything else there is... i have a hard time believing that increasing access to increasing volumes of highly diverse music could do anything except be an incentive to creativity... you have so many more people listening and loving so much more music that better talent will rise to the challenges you are bringing up and get past the homogoneous culture you are worried about... besides you should take a look around you to the quality of music in the current label controlled system - britney spears and the backstreet boys are label made and i cant think of a better example of an uncreative homogoneous world than that.
yep, yep, yep.... the new questions that would need to be asked arent how a family would support itself with free food and free refrigerators and free welcome mats which its free dog can piss on before it comes in the free door, but instead what impact this kind of world (not in a jetsons type delusional-futurist type leap but in small little steps seaping into our daily lives ) would have on that famliy and on us... the answers to that and the new questions that might be raised are part of why we live our lives and dont just sit on the sidelines talking about it or thinking we know everything already.
with some small changes by engineer ed and programmer paul the fruit duplicating super machine can now be used to make absolutely free parts for any car, including that hot new red ferrari farmer jones wants... now the only cost is labor and farmer jones can buy one for his wife (or husband) too...
with the savings from not having to pay for fruit anymore (assuming we havent stopped doing anything else productive or stopped being creative out of stupidity or laziness) we could easily invest in diverse fruit farming on a larger scale and more localized level than ever before because farming is no longer about having to produce to put food on the table but instead wanting to plow the land for the pleasure of having fresh grown fruit... its all either very idealistic and vague (not surprising since its a damn metaphor) or a very practical starting point for individualized and creative ways to keep adding to progress, instead of lashing out at it with whines about copyright violations.
now farmer fred gets to eat for free just like everyone else and doesnt have to break his back plowing the land for the rest of his life just to barely make ends fruit, unless he wants to, and can lead a more diverse life doing something else... what that something else might be is the real question.
the problem isnt the advances we make, its what we do next.
i agree completely that the eff *could be* something effective and to be proud of but it isnt anywhere near where it could be and has mostly been moving sideways since the blue ribbon campaign.... are you telling me that with so much "geek" support thats the best site they can have or the most engaging and inviting of action they can be... theres no "help develop this site"... no hyperactive mailing lists highlighted on the site... no active efforts to spread beyond commenting on the sidelines and giving legal support in certain cases here and there.... what the eff does do is great but it could so easily open up a much bigger can of worms in defense of the issues we are all dedicatd to than it does... for an advocate of the internet and all its high tech legions supporting it there isnt much difference between what the eff does and what all the other old style organizations who have no clue what any of us or any of the hardware and code are capable of...
