  1. Expectations and reality on Does Transmeta Live Up To The Hype? · · Score: 2

I work for a big corporation and I can say that it is unusual for any company to say its product doesn't live up to the hype. What we (not me, but others in my organization) normally do is come up with strange configurations of our hardware that make these amazing claims possible. Its suprising to hear anyone say that something they have a stake in is not living up to the hype. I'm not sure if this is good or bad. What could the ulterior motives be? If the motive is that they plan to use these in Toshiba notebooks and that won't work, good for us. I want a wearable computer anyway (which won't need a stupid backlight). My guess, however, would be that it's going to suck a lot worse than anyone is letting on. Call it pessimist's intuition :)

  2. KDE vs. Gnome on KDE Developer on the GNOME Foundation · · Score: 1

They both suck. If the developers of both teams stopped slamming each other and focused on not hogging so much RAM, I would consider using one of them. Frankly, as a user, I don't care how well designed either is as long as:
    a) it works in a nonflaky manner
    b) the interface is intuitive
    c) it doesn't waste resources (as I mentioned above).

I guess that's my challenge to the KDE/GNOME folks. Do that and you'll win the hearts of everyone.

  6. Blame on Hacker Crackdown? · · Score: 1

    a) How many people have gone out and bought albums because they got an MP3 from Napster?

    b) Does anyone have a car stereo that plays MP3s?

    c) I'm going to sue the cook at McDonald's because he/she is cooking unhealthy food for me. I mean, I know it's unhealthy and all, but if she didn't cook it for me, then I wouldn't be increasing my risk of a heart attack.

I think there are a million analogies that could be given to cover a programmers butt. The problem is that the government is made up of politicians who have campaigns that are funded by people. These people contributing to campaign funds include multi-national corporations. It is not in the best interest of multi-national corporations (like movie and music companies) to allow their copyrighted stuff to be shared accross our 'wonderful' internet (or at least they don't think it is). My guess is that the man will lay blame wherever it can. Our only real hope is that enough people get pissed off -- and that may not even matter.

It seems to me that humanity is riddled with twisted logic about blame. Programmers are not the root cause of this problem.

If a programmers are held liable, you can throw that much more freedom out the window.

    My prediction of the future:
    1) Thou shalt be responsible for someone kicking your ass because you said that his shoes look funny.

    2) As a professional football player, thou shalt be responsible for all the little kiddies who try to be like you and end up breaking their arms.

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHH

It's stuff like this that makes me lose hope. How could we wield the technology we do when we're such a stupid race?

I'll be in the corner crying now.

  9. Re:Alternatives? on Report Of New Outlook Exploit · · Score: 1

This is in response to everyone's comment concerning this thread.

You can't compare applications unless you put them in a context. You need requirements (ack - I almost vomited while typing that part in). Outlook has the advantage of being intuitive for Microsoft users. Other apps work for other people. Do you think that the app for you has no flaws/holes? I bet there's someone out there who will disagree...

I agree with the original statement that this wouldn't have been as big a deal if it were any other company's product. But the flip side is that Microsoft shot themselves in the foot. If they didn't shove all of their crap down everyone's throat, then the number of Outlook users would be smaller and it wouldn't be as big a deal.

As far as MS SUCKS people writing an app to compete with Outlook goes, I bet that it could be done. The reason why it hasn't -- most people who hate microsoft don't like to develop features on top of a shoddy core. Most anti-microsoft developers spend time working out their bugs before releasing it. Also, I personally HATE gui development -- it's so BORING (to me. no offense to those of you who like it). I would rather have a nice text interface for my mail client (like Pine).

If you want the ideal solution, burn it all down and start over.

  10. Microsoft's idea of privacy on Microsoft and Online Privacy??!! · · Score: 1

For those of us who have used that hell spawn of a company's products, we all know that Microsoft is incapable of providing true choices for the user. This means that you will choose not to accept a cookie and good old IE will choose the EXACT OPPOSITE of what you chose because it knows what you really want.

Seriously though, call me old fashioned, but I don't think Microsoft is ready for a real responsibility like security. In fact, I wish they would work on fixing all of their stupid bugs and coming out with something reliable before adding new 'features'
