  1. Re:Unix/Linux is vulnerable (only if root is dumb) on Another Windows Macro Virus Wreaks Havoc · · Score: 1

Then how about comparing how Windows apps running on NT handle multiple users. I prefer the Unix style over the each app setting up its own user space. Even NT assumes that each person has his own computer and software installs don't work for every user and each user who wants to access the program has to have administrator privileges to re-install it.

  2. Ziff-Davis Editor's Choice Awards. on NOS Crossroads · · Score: 1

Has anybody else noticed that the Ziff-Davis Editor's choice awards go the company with the most color full page adds? This info was also by a remarkable coincidence reflected in the benchmarks the ZD has done over the years.

I'm afraid Linux has a long way to go to catch up to Windows in the EC catagory!

  3. Re:New MegaRAID driver! on Mindcraft Fun Continues · · Score: 1

It seems that Micros~1 and Mindcraft knew that this was going to happen. However, by denying Linux the use of these drivers clearly demonstrates how tenuous the NT advantage must be.

This clearly shows how long Mindcraft has been looking for a platform that gives NT enough of and advantage. Perhaps these new drivers eliminate the advantage, but we will never know...

  4. Build a Linux machine that equals performance on The Mindcraft Debacle: Part MCXVI · · Score: 1
Instead of trying to beat Microsoft and Mind-benchmark-craft in a stacked environment, we should build and tune a Linux box that provides equal or greater performance with less expensive hardware than the Dell.

Mindcraft did publish the performance of their NT box, so there is a target to aim for.

  5. Minimum Hardware to equal Quad Xeon with NT on ZD Critiques Mindcraft Benchmarks · · Score: 1

It would be interesting to find out how little hardware would be required for a properly tuned Linux box with Samba and Apache to equal the performance of the Quad Pentium NT server.

If a single or dual PII with a fast SCSI disk and Linux could equal or beat the performance of the Quad NT machine then both Micro$oft and Mindcraft would be embarassed.
