  1. How can SCO be correct? on HP Clarifies Indemnification Offer For Linux Users · · Score: 1

I don't think this is correct. Think about what HP is saying. Martin Fink, HP's vice president of Linux says "If (customers) were to get sued by SCO, we would take over their defense and assume liability on their behalf."

Can anyone believe that HP would take over the defense of something they have serious doubts they can defend? Not only that, but assume liability. These are big time money numbers, considering SCO wants 3 billion dollars from IBM . If anything, it proves that they think this is a risk free offer, and excellent PR.

Unless there is some huge conspiracy between SCO and HP, this is just SCO putting their spin on damaging news.

  2. Is being first to market a priority? on "Quick 'n Dirty" vs. "Correct and Proper"? · · Score: 1

Sometimes there is no choice but to do it the quick and dirty way, and being first to market is such a situation.

Company A and Company B are working on a product that does basically the same thing. Both companies know that they are both working on a similar product, and they both know of potential customers that will go with the first one to provide at least a decent solution. A correct and properly tested solution might take a year to develop, a quick and dirty one that does the job six months. What do you think is going to happen?

Yes, the development team might say "Well, we will fix it on version 2, and do things the proper way." But then, the Feature Wars start. The customer wants a set of features, and the competing company, which by the way, finished it's product shortly after you, is promising them for version 2. Whoever gets those has an advantage. And so it starts again, a race to be the first to market with such and such feature, and whatever got done wrong on version one stays that way (because there is no time to fix it), and more stuff done the wrong way goes to version 2.

It looks to me that the "Quick and Dirty" way can't be avoided in money making, "first to market race" projects. And that covers about every for profit company out there.
