  1. Re:RIAA can blame congress on this one... on RIAA Almost Down To Pre-Napster Revenues · · Score: 1
Makes me think of a quote from Ghost in the shell:

No matter how powerful we might be fighting-wise, a system where all the parts react the same way is a system with a fatal flaw. Like individual, like organization. Overspecialization leads to death

  2. Duh! on Export-level Encryption Proves Insufficient · · Score: 1

The US is not the only country capable of highgrade encryption, and even if it were, there is NOTHING stopping some non-us citizen to get his/hers hand on the highgrade encryption software (warez anyone) ... so quit being so damn naive!

  3. Re:I know what I'd get rid of... on Improving Computer Form Factors? · · Score: 1

Actually, getting rid of all the legacy junk would be nice. Implementing USB 2.0 (450mbit or so) would be the answer. And use the same tech inside the box, ie, use USB drives, so instead of the big ugly, chunky, airflow-obstructing cables, use USB cables. All you need is an array of 3-6 USB connectors internally, then you could hook up whatever you'd want. Heck, you could even add an internal USB hub incase the connectors run out.

Also, when dumping legacy ports, the manufactors should provide the buyer with atleast one usb2serial and one usb2parallel

There, I've said it... and besides, those who really need fast drives already use SCSI-3 or something ;-)

  4. We've used them for 3 years on What Do You Think of ASUS Laptops? · · Score: 2, Informative

At our company we've used ASUS laptops for nearly three years now, and I've been through two of the flagships (L8400 and the older F8400 (i think)) and they've been top notch quality, especially considering we've taken them along for demos, used them on long flights. Even now, we have one at Comdex. A guy at work uses it for linux work and he's very happy. The most severe problem we ever had with one was the spring to the powerbutton giving out, but thats it. Compared to the Compaq's I used at my old work (which had a tendency to lack good drivers and also had serious problems with the screen going berzerk/garbled), these rock.

If I had to say something bad about them, its that they lack GeForce2Go, so my "leet skillz" in Unreal Tournament really suffers from playing on them ;)

  5. Statistics on ATI Drivers Geared For Quake 3? · · Score: 1

After reading both the HardOCP article and looking at the images, I couldn't help to think of the saying that with statistics you can prove whatever you want. And couldn't have cared less (one reason is that I don't play that game ;)) if it hadn't been for the last part of the article:

"Our engineering team is committed to providing the best visual experience for the user in all applications, with the optimal combination of high frame rates, image quality, and stability"

I thought optimal meant that all of the three items should be at the best possible level. What I think he meant was:

"Our engineering team is committed to providing the best numbers for the reporter in all applications, with the optimal combination of high frame rates and stability"

Now, this would certainly be true. As for me, I'll stick with NVidia, they may be bullies and even lie at times, but never when confronted with facts (as far as I can remember). And besides, its too darn expensive to by a new card now ;)

    Thats my two cents anyway...

  6. Was there a movie based based on this? on Biotech Insects to be Released Into the Wild · · Score: 1
I seem to recall that Hollywood made a movie not much unlike this. They wanted to remove the cocroaches, so they engineered a special version that could mimic them, but not reproduce.

I think it goes without saying that they failed, and the new "mimic" cocroach took over and started to kill humans aswell.

The movie is called Mimic, and I think the engineers should watch it before they do it.

  7. I think they are lucky... on Blizzard Sues Over Diablo Movie Title · · Score: 1
... that the church doesn't sue Blizzard or the Diablo himself doesn't arrise to punish them, but then, suing is more or less what the Diablo would do, it carries his trademark. Thus, Blizzard must be runned by the Diablo in some strange way. ;-)

I don't know, I'm just rambling this early in the morning without breakfast ;-)

  8. Exhange etc on When Is Exchange Inappropriate For The Enterprise? · · Score: 1
We have had the same discussion at work. We are running IMAP and LDAP so the problem of email and GAL (Global Address Lists) aren't any trouble and since we installed Courier IMAP, we even have shared folders (wee) .. But the really problem is that of the calendar. Many users complained that they wanted to be able to invite other people to meeting, etc, ie, they wanted Exchange. Now, we had a perfect email system, and buying into the Exchange licensing deals wasn't an option, so we created our own web based calendar, which not only allowed you to inspect/book eachother, but also made it platform independent (which is a good thing since we run Linux, Windows, Netscape, IE, etc) but it also made working from home and/or customer a breeze, since all we had to do was to allow access to the calendar from the outside (protected with SSL and stuff).

Now, you don't have to go as far as to develop your own calendar, since there are plenty of good webbased calendars available for free (running as PHP, Perl, whatever). This in my opinion a good thing as its free (the execs like that word) and usually very troublefree, and no viruses can mess up your calender since they have no way via MAPI or anything else to access it.

  9. Experience system on Natural Language CLIs? · · Score: 1
One idea that struck me while reading the different respones (and especially one about making it hard to *really* use the computer) was that it should have some kind of experience system.

Sounds strange? Well hear me out

The user should, after installation be asked a few question to determine how skilled he/she is. Then, when using the CLI (with NLP) the user should be awarded experience points when doing more and more complex things, and at certain thresholds, more advanced functions should be available.

Maybe this is just a crazy rambling (could be caused by exessive playing of DiabloII) but it would allow the user to adapt at his/hers own pace and not be scared of by "mv [a-cA-B]* somedrawer/" etc ;-)

Anyway, thats my five cents (and my first post .. yeaaah! ;))
