As a cynical former employee of Cycorp, I have many doubts about the likelihood of Cyc achieving true AI. But, what I can tell you, is that if CYC ever does it will not be because of Doug Lenat. He does not have the technical abilities to even influence the outcome. The person who would make it happen is Keith Goolsbey. He IS the inference engine. For years he has almost-singlehandedly developed and improved Cyc's inference engine without receiving the credit or recognition for doing the actual work.
If Mr. King expects the universities to take reasonable steps(whatever that means), then I have a suggestion for him. Why doesn't he provide the universities with software that will prevent the illegal infringement on their copyrighted material without infringing on the rights of the people, however few, who are not breaking the law.
Bet they couldn't write it.
The blocking of Napster for illegal purposes would be impossible. The knuckleheads wouldn't know their own copyrighted material going over the wire. Even if they wanted to block Napster entirely, they would have a hard time. Disgruntled CS students are a tenacious breed. Don't under estimate them They would change the IP address. Change the port. Change the protocol. Serve it off their home boxes. Etc.
Sure the admins at these universities can block an IP address from the network, but what if the Napster IP address was dynamic. Or there were mirror sites. On and on and on.
The bottom line is that the long term "reasonable steps to put an end to copyright violations" would be monetarily and technically non-trival and unreasonable. So let the Mr. King and his buddies do the work.
