that's so funny! I was just thinking about whether or not to post the *exact* same story. I too interviewed there and that same gentlement told me quote "I wrote our own database because Oracle was too slow".
It was at that point that I began to wonder if things weren't quite right with Infospace.
Did he mention anything about the new Bubble Sort they were pioneering, because it was much less code?
Investors are greedy people. Why all the sympathy?
They got what they deserved.
Yeah, but the way this stuff reads they're companies along the lines of Enron. Shuffling investor money around to report as revenue and then running away with a fortune before the truth hits.
It's not that investors are greedy, they're like you and me and would like a good return on their money and are attracted to businesses which seem to be doing it better than others. Where they fail is in doing good research on the company or actually being defrauded.
Now, this is the kind of thinking and research development that I would expect from HP!
What? They're not supposed to just buy up some half-baked company that's struggling with quality issues and try to merge the two disparate entities together using words like "Synergy"?
only the End of the Beginning. Startups continue to get funded although they now have to have some reasonable idea of how they will actually make money. There was a report on the San Francisco public radio station yesterday that said that if you look at growth in Silicon Vally over the last 20 years and "flatten" (whatever that means) the growth around the bubble, Silicon Valley continues to grow at relatively the same pace as before.
Sounds like you heard the same BBC analysis I did.
The current mini-boom is because of the meteoric growth in the economy of China. Even closed iron mines in Duluth, MN are reopening. (see steel stocks lately? They're up over the last year)
The sad bit about the bust was many good companies and products got blown out with the weak or bad. Some bright opportunists have picked up a quite a lot of it or just the IP.
laptops make nice replacements for a desktopm where space is at a premium, where you can use the power for intensive tasks, the mobility feature in being a laptop comes in as a nice bonus.
I use a laptop as my primary workstation. The downside is they usually have much slower bus speed, which you tend to notice when loading windows apps or large files.
Doesn't this seem like a high price for bulk chips?
No. How long have you been following CPU pricing? It's always high for the first offerings. By this time next year you'll see half that line discontinued and the remainder heavily discounted.
Rule #1 regarding technology: As soon as it hits store shelves, it's already obsolete.
Ok, let's look at this without the rose coloured glasses:
64 bit CPUs
25 - 35 watts (peak)
Better get used to lugging a massive battery if you plan to really get the most out of that 64 bit CPU. Honestly,
why else would you have a laptop with such a race horse in it if you weren't going to be using it to its
capacity? Ok, maybe you're one of the few who run a fully 64 bit OS (probly Linux) with fully 64 bit apps (did yer own builds
targeted at AMD64 instructions) and you really need the full addressing, but won't be using all the ponies. Odds are, you'll be an early
adopter for somewhat nebulous reasons. Cool, but not essential
Captain Oats and Princess Sparkle are totally gonna hook up and do it. Last episode Seth and Summer kissed, so now its only a matter of time before they bring their plastic companions into the mix:)
Way back when Jurassic Park came out, all these brilliant parents took their anklebiters to the
local Bijou and to see the interesting dinosaurs. Whenever something graphic or loud happened the kids
would scream, some bursting into crying fits. I could just hear these parents being roused from sleep for the next
month by kids having nightmares. What could be so disturbing in this film?
"Aaauugghhh! Mommy! Daddy! The Jar Jar has invited me to a sleepover with Jedi Juice!"
"at least Google has responded with integrity and consistency." Or maybe they got tired of Slashdot readers bashing them for underhanded business practices? In all honesty though, I'm glad to see them rectify this.
I keep getting this phone call:
"Hello, this is Google! Our conscience has ordered us to call every person in the world to apologize for our cloaking scam. We're sorry. If you can find it in your heart to forgive us, send one dollar to: Sorry Google, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway,
Mountain View, CA 94043 You have the power!"
1. Actually tries to follow the "don't be evil" thing.
2. Reads slashdot.
3. cares.
little does anyone suspect, however that google has a heart of blackest evil and in their most vile cunning have dressed in sheep's clothing all the while plotting world domination. You'll know when you see google-o's on the shelf at the store, sugar, carbs, fat, even msg and it'll be all over for you as they capture the souls of your children! bwa-ha-ha-ha-haaaah ack choke cough wheeze hork...
Oh, wicked, wicked Google. Oh, it is a naughty business and it must pay the penalty, and here in/., we have but one punishment for setting cloaking: you must tie it down on a bed and spank it.
Just like every other product Micro$oft puts out, this one will be put off for another two years. Mark my words, we will not be seeing WinFs for a while.
MS release schedule == plan to maximize share value
1. This is MS, the company that takes 15 years to realize viruses might be a problem.
2. If it wasn't going to make it in a new version of windows, which accounts for half of all their revenue, how were they going to give it away for free??
3. the company which unleashed activex
Remember when the quicken episode, back in '95?
"and just like this i could transfer their balance to my account..."
"We are currently evaluating making the WinFS storage subsystem available on this platform and will make the decision based on what is best for customers." a Microsoft spokesperson told BetaNews."
no one wants to see some random local little league game or an amatureish star-trek ripoff. sure, it may be fun for about 3 minutes, but the novelty wears off really fast.
The kind of genius that gave us Saturday Night Live, H2G2 radio plays then tv series, Dr. Who and Monty Python could never happen again without the guidance of the kind of brilliant people in charge of major media networks. It was probably for the best that Nickelodeon/Viacom canned John K. just as Ren & Stimpy were getting good, and all that sort of thing.
The world really does need more manufactured talent and less garage efforts.
(/sarcasm)
Sysadmins? Screw that, most of this shit happens with social engineering.
This is getting to be like the Enron/WorldCom type of scandal. Company X coughs up a few thousand files, Company Y coughs up a couple hundred thousand files, Company Z has the fucking barn door wide open and the theives have a battered pickup truck parked on the lawn and they're so damn surprised that it takes place.
So... where's the law that can be leveraged, saying these companies are responsible for keeping this information under lock and key, to hit them with the civil suits they so richly deserve for their laxis maxis business controls?
people demand entertainment with relatively high production values,
Cough. Choke.
I can't believe you said that. Ok, maybe slick looking, but anyone with some practice can get that down pretty well after a few tries.
Camerawork and writing will be necessary skills. Editting you can do with Pinnacle or something else. I think a few people with some good props and some imagination are all that's needed for the next big thing. Just remember, you'll no longer need a million watt transmitter, antenna tower and FCC license to do your own broadcasting and you'll be able to appeal to audiences anywhere in the world, unlike the phoney stupid border restrictions imposed upon us by region coding!

Uh.
Mine seem to stay on, thus consuming those extremely valuable milliwatts I'd whine, wheedle and plead for when the power starts to run out.
What? They're not supposed to just buy up some half-baked company that's struggling with quality issues and try to merge the two disparate entities together using words like "Synergy"?
Dang. It is a rebirth of HP!
You mean Feathers McGraw? As in
Inexplicably it was Shaun that made a big hit as a toy. We'll make an exception. It'll make for A Grand Day Out, especially if I remember to have A Close Shave and don't wear The Wrong Trousers.
I thought for a mo that they were taking over for the venerable Peter Sallis, the familiar voice of Wallace. I don't need shocks like that!
your's truly will provide the voice of gromit

First, why such a lame link for this post? Here's a more informative one Editors, sheesh!
Ok, let's look at this without the rose coloured glasses:
Wait a sec... what happened to Mr. Sparkle?
They'll edit in Han Solo's father shooting Greedo's father first!

That never stopped them before!
Yeah, such a show has some nerve attracting a cult following.

I see your writing on this blog. I also see Roger's blog. Seems it's just a difference between those who have something to say.
it's the slashdot show, starring Anonymous Coward and the 1337 b34t b4nd...
