    bad earth= highly resistive path=changes to p/s specs in relation to intended ground. though this was probably not the cause of excess current it could have been part of a more serious problem in the switchmode power supply having a couple of storage caps leaking to ground. and yes grounding is mainly for safety but it is used in other ways.
