  1. Re:I "abuse" it on Are Public WHOIS Records Necessary? · · Score: 1

Speaking as someone who has been rung up, threatened, and verbally abused, as a direct result of some content on a domain that was in my name, I would simply like to say "fuck that".

I'm simply glad I listed a PO box as contact address, rather than my residential address, since the individual in question lived in the same town. I imagine if that had not been the case, I would have ended up on one end or another of some assault charges.

  2. Multiple Language issues..... on English Language And Its Effect On Programming? · · Score: 1

    My worst job ever....

Rewriting, for linux, win32 perl written by a czech speaking cobol programmer, who couldn't spell.

All the variable names were in czech (as were all the comments), but, most of them wer spelt incorrectly.... made looking them up in the czech->english dictionary rather tricky.....

  3. Re:Missing the Point Entirely! on Cyberselfish: Technolibertarianism · · Score: 1

I have freedom, at work. I also have the freedom to leave. I have freedom, in my family. I also have the freedom to leave that family. (note that if I had dependants, I would feel a moral obligation to carry on supporting them... but I don't have the right to tell you, that you should do the same.)

If an employer (or family member, or friend, or casual aquaintance) does something that I find distasteful/unpleasant/abhorent, I have a right to talk to them about it, and try and convince them, to change. They have a right to refuse to listen, or refuse to change. I have a right to cease association with them, or ignore their behaviour, or try to correct it (or whatever).

For myself, libertarianism is a luxury, afforded to me by my place in life, at this time. A couple of years ago, I left a job because of the way the owner treated customers (the worst of the worst type of PC hardware retail rippoff dealers). Had I had a family to support, that would not have been an option. The hardship I chose to endure (I was unemployed for some time after leaving), is not something that I could morally risk inflicting on those who are dependant on me. However, for myself, I made the choice.

To me, libertarianism is about having choices, being treated like an adult, and making up your own mind. I don't want a big brother, inflicting its idea of what's "right" upon me.

  4. Re:It's all about ergonomics on How Much Digital Tool Convergence Is Possible? · · Score: 1

Why put it to your ear? Head a headset, or earplug and throat mike.

Hell, make it a pair of headphones so I can listen to music until the someone calls, then have it cut out, and ring instead. For niceness sake, have it fade the music back in, after the call.

Usability, have the heaphones detect when they're "in use" (ie, on head, or in ear)... how hard can that be?

leave the device itself on your belt, or desk. only pick it up to dial, or perform PDA functions (ie, the form factor that it's designed for).

Combine that with decent synching to my desktop devices (work and home PC), for all my phone numbers (including who called, who I called, and for how long, let's give me more information on billable hours)...

Want a camera? fine, put a lens+screen "module" into the PDA. Or, combined with a HUD type display, just a lens module.

    In short, modularity, and connectivity.
